Just a quick update on my fiasco. yesterday a fibre rep confirms my new appointment for Dec 9. I ask for assurances that this one won't get cancelled too.
She tells me her system is now saying January 30th at the *earliest* before I could get fibre so she highly doubts my Dec 9 install will go ahead. Anyways, long story short: After being installed with Aliant TV last May, I'm still not able to get a HD feed for my second HDTV upstairs. I have been patient, and have waited more than a reasonable amount of time for "bandwidth to become available". With Fibre being pushed out time, and time, and time, and time again (this time by a magnitude of months, rather than weeks) I just can't wait any longer. Couple that with the highly compressed artifact ridden picture, 720p max encoded resolution, lack of AMC, reduced internet speed, and non true dolby digital signal .. and their refusal to at least fix me up with whole home PVR...no/call no show techs... I have Bell Expressvu coming out this Friday. Enough's enough. I'll still get Aliant Fibre internet if/when it comes to Kilbride (probably spring or summer next year - January 30 is their newest "tenative" date, following Sept 29, October 29, and November 29 as the three previous "tentative" dates). I'm not mad at Aliant, or raging. Just frustrated and tired of waiting. |

@byrneo i dont blame you for not waiting any longer. For the last 8 months alaint as been advertising the heck outta fibreop, with no customer respect in mind. Fibreop as been avaliable only 500 feet away from my house for 3 months now; with no update for my street. Im on whiteley dr in mt pearl and they dont even know a date yet. Satelite dish looks pretty good to me to at the moment, bandwith on the bell alaint line is getting under my skin. good luck to all

What do you think Bell Aliant should have done/should do differently?

I hear ya, Central.
It's no one's fault - Aliant no doubt (if they could) would have it available to everyone TODAY if possible. I'm sure they want all our moneys asap. Its complicated, tedious work no doubt, to get this into people's homes. I don't feel "entitled" or "slighted" just frustrated cause my situation has been going on since our install, essentially. We were told we could not get HD to the upstairs TV until another port on the vDSL switch opened up - tech told me could be a matter of days, or weeks, as people move in and out of the neighbourhood, etc. He said to keep calling in, and eventually someone would come out and run us a second line to get HD upstairs cause my exsting line maxes out at 25Mb/sec (good enough for HD PVR downstairs, and 800k.sec internet speed). Anyways customer care said they don't usually run a second line for a customer, and that I could either remove my PVR (to get HD to upstairs tv) or just wait for Fiber (which she said would be in September). That date has now slid a few times and the new estimate is February but who really knows. So we had no choice but to go back to satelite. |

Well FibreOp isn't available in my area yet, but a business I am working with in Donavan's has their "preliminary" FibreOp visit happening on Monday. As far as I know it is ready to go in that area. Also, this install was only booked last week.. so I'm happy with the response time.
I'll report back with details. If all goes well it should be installed later on in the week. Also noticed that Business FibreOp is 20 down / 5 up.. for $75 a month (for 12 mths). Not a very good deal vs the residential service. |

No static IPs at this time. The current business plan just seems to be something to get their feet wet and test the market.

Well, that will cut back on a lot of FibreOP business accounts. Many places can't run without a static IP and the price is no bargain.
I thought it might be as expensive as it is, because of the static IP. I guess not. |

That depends, really. A lot of businesses just need an internet connection and their infrastructure is actually hosted elsewhere. The current plan works fine for that. For hosting servers within a business this plan isn't really meant for that.
They'll probably be launching new ones so it is just a waiting game. |

I'm not saying things could not be re-arranged to deal with dynamic IPs. The simple fact is most businesses have always been static and to change, could cost them $$.
They have always paid more, to have that static IP so now they want them to pay more but without the static IP. So it costs more to have fibre-op from B-A and it also cost more internally to go dynamic IP. It won't sell in the short next 1-2 years. |

While for some businesses that is true I disagree that it has always been static IPs for most businesses and I also disagree that it would cost them $$$ to change. It really depends on the business itself. Take a vet or a small office. They would never need or require a static IP and would use hosted services elsewhere. What about a restaurant offering wireless to customers? A small cafe? They just want an internet connection.
For companies directly doing computer stuff then yes they will have had static IPs most likely and would not use this plan. You can't lump all businesses together. One final thing... businesses are getting FibreOP. The uptake is not as huge as residential sure but there is still a wait time. I know as I ordered it. |

My guess is that the plans are set this way (Low upload speed, dynamic IP) to discourage the hosting of websites. That, and in turn, to hopefully have the business host with Aliant or upgrade to their "dedicated" access. For many businesses, the 20/5 would be just fine. It's a shame they don't get as good a deal as the residential service, though. And not able to get higher down speeds.

Unless you're pretty large, most businesses won't be hosting their own external facing servers anymore. Hosting and managed services are too cheap and plentiful. If you were, you'd probably be looking for something with some uptime guarantees and priority service should it break on a saturday at 9pm.
This type of service is to get your small office online, and you don't need a static IP for that. |

I find the cheap hosting services are just that....cheap. They promise the world until something happens and then you find out how bad they really are.
The good hosting services are not cheap but they do look after you. It then becomes a toss up of what is the best path. Cost wise, it can be close but you have more control with your own onsite equipment. Also, if you already have onsite server(s) whats one or two more? |

Here's a completed business install from the Mt. Pearl area.
First day was a preliminary look, 2nd day they ran a cable from the outside of the building to the network room, 3rd day cable from the pole to the outside of the building, and the installation of equipment inside. Speed test of WiFi on my iPhone gave about 18.5 down, 4 up. Service is rated for 20/5. Looks great! The size of the fibre optic cable being used is amazing. It's very tiny. |
