I agree with NB Josh, if Habs win they play Friday since NBC won't pick it up. But if Bos wins NBC may have a dilemma. They can go PHI v. BOS which is two of the biggest media markets and two teams they focused on heavily during the regular season, or they can go WAS v. TB/PIT, so its Ovy v. Pens (Sid?). I have a feeling they go PHI/BOS as its the safer of the two but still tough.

Any guesses for second round what CBC gets assuming Habs dont win...

Well NBC will probably have both Eastern series (if Montreal doesn't win) between Saturday/Sunday anyway. Unless they want to go with a DET-SJ game with a noon local start. If they did that they would have to use a second crew, which is possible now that they are run by Comcast, but I'm still not sure I see it happening. We might even see the Habs play Sunday afternoon on NBC because of this.

I think CBC goes with PIT-WSH if PIT and BOS win. If TB and BOS win, I think they will go with BOS-PHI.

Back in 1966 I was 15 and remember being on the west coast of the Charlottes with the old man in a logging show and hiking up a mountain with a transistor radio and tuning in a Leaf-RedWing game....Bruce Gamble was in goal for the Leafs....never forgot it.

Team 1040 in Vancouver has been saying that Friday will be the start for round 2 of the Canucks because it skips over Monday's election. If Montreal wins, they will play gm 1 on Saturday. The CBC would want that.

If the Habs don't win, the CBC's other series could be any of them. Wash. and TB or Pit is decent. SJ and Detroit would be good because of the Red Wings following. Philly and Boston is good too. It's a no lose situation for CBC.

Ron Maclean said they were 99% sure it would start Thursday night. CBC would want a Saturday night game for ratings. They can take a 2 day break to miss the election. After all we just had a 2 day break in MTL series. Oh well we will see with the conclusion of tonights games.

EDIT: NHL has announced game 1 is Thursday at 9pm ET on CBC

Yes, good move by the CBC and TSN to do this. The Lightning-Penguins game will start at a special time of 1700h Pacific, 2000h Eastern. That is an hour later than the Habs-Bruins game.

The 1800h Pacific start means that this game should be the only game of the night. That is a fair compromise. I wonder if game two will be part of a regular HNIC Saturday doubleheader should the Canadiens win tonight. If Boston wins, game 2 could be played on either Saturday or Sunday starting at 1700h or 1730h Pacific.

I wonder if the CBC has received "future considerations" for giving TSN the Lightning-Penguins game.

So much speculation about starting times! What does it really matter if a game starts at 6 or 7? We'll all watch the games in any case. The nice thing is that we still have two Canadian teams going strong. That's all that matters.

The CBC chooses the Red Wings-Sharks series as their second pick as long as there are no conflicts with the Canucks series. If there are conflicts, the CBC will choose the Capitals series since all of those games will probably be evening starts. Over on NBC, it will be the Red Wings-Sharks and the Bruins-Flyers for the weekend games.

It does matter when it starts at 6:00 or 7:00 locally on weekdays. Trying to get home or to the game to see the beginning of it during busy rush hour traffic is not easy. Solo playoff games that are in the Eastern timezone should start at 2000h (8:00pm) so westerners can see more of the game.

Playing with the start times like that for solo games is typically reserved for the finals where people from coast to coast are keen to watch the game. Eastern Conference games are most popular in the east and Western Conference are most popular in the west so the start time is set for the target market.

As hwy19man said, starting the game too early makes it difficult to watch the beginning locally (you can't always leave work early). Similarly starting it to late, might cause people to go to bed before it is over (they do need to work the next day).

I think they are doing it on Thursday because they don't want a standalone game starting really late. IIRC they did the same thing two years ago when CHI-VAN opened by itself, with the other series starting on Friday and Saturday.

Games 2 and 5 will be Saturday games, so the start times won't be an issue until a possible game 7 after tomorrow.

Not usually one to watch ice hockey, but trying to watch the Bruins Montreal game on CBC is hard work.

CBC, in their ultimate wisdom, have the HD (which doesn't look like HD anyway) picture zoomed in so the score is missing from the top of the screen.

Is it worth firing off an email to them and seeing if they rectify the problem?

Hahahahaha, 30 seconds after posting this the switch monkey did his job ;-)
