Windows 7 (x64) SP1 - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

Just updated Win 7 x64 to SP1

This went without incident.

Observations:

It's a multi-part process.
1) Downloaded with Windows Update
2) Installed using Windows Update
3) During shutdown, configured Windows Update
4) During first restart it continued configuring Windows showing Stage 1 of 2
5) At 30% it rebooted without any notification?!
6) During second restart it continued to configure (it did NOT show Stage # of #) ?!
7) Desktop finally appeared.

Operationally, the overall feel is slightly crisper with slightly faster loads. I didn't expect this as the machine is kept up to date.

Only SP1 downside so far is something has changed that causes a repeating 1.5 second reading or writing to the hard drive. It didn't do this prior to SP1.

One niggle that is still present that I find really irritating is when copying mixed content from a CD is Win7 insists on creating a desktop.ini nested deep in a "burn" subdirectory on the HD and places this at the end of the CD contents list in Windows Explorer. When CTRL-A is used to block and copy, the copy fails with Windows reporting that the desktop.ini doesn't exist.
If the desktop.ini is sent to the recycle bin, and removed from the list, all files copy correctly. And the desktop.ini file gets recreated upon each new restart of the system.

I had trouble downloading it using Windows Update. It would fail at 18%. Followed everything and still nothing.

I was able to download the pack manually and install it.

It only restarted once at the 30% mark.

Download, restart, configure, restart... Make me glad am using Linux... Oh crap I just ordered a laptop with 7 in it! Well there always dual booting!

Or for people who don't have axe to grind and not blowing it out of proportion...

Start Windows Update. Click Check for updates. Click install. Walk away and do something that matters. When you come back it's all done for you. Yup, that simple. Just it wouldn't be chat worthy.

Just downloaded the DVD image. It went quickly. Will test it tomorrow on a couple of PCs. Will probably attempt to create a slipstreamed Win7 SP1 disk at some time as well.

Now, if Linux fanboys would just stop dumping on this thread...

I had a problem with update. I couldn't install my HP Deskjet 4580 software. So I tried to remove Sp-1 (no luck) So I tried system restore, but I lost all previous restore dates. I had no other choice but reinstall win 7.

2 PCs (one 64 bit) and one laptop in the house all updated yesterday through windows update. No issues at all.

I've run the updated on 4 pcs now (32 & 64 versions) without any issues.

I booted up my tiny tablet a couple of nights ago and was offered the SP1 update. Took over 40 minutes on that one to download and install but it is a tiny and slow tablet (manufacturer only supports up to Vista which is what it came installed with). No issues.

Went to install SP1 on another, even older, tablet which went a bit faster (faster drive, more memory). No issues again.

Will have to wait to get home to update the 2 x64 desktops.

The constant bumping of the hard drive after SP1 was installed has ceased...?!

Go figure...

No other new issues so far...

The copying from mixed CD source with generated desktop.ini in Explorer list remains.... I'd love to know the logic behind that design.... :-(

No problem on my PC. One interesting note is that there was more updates after I installed SP 1 so I recommend running Windows Update AFTER the SP1 update just to make sure.

Hugh, that's been my procedure all along... This time, nothing extra after SP1, but yes, everyone should do this. Normally there's update upon update until nothing new shows. A bit irritating, but that's how it's always been... :-(

Other than being a painfully slow download and an equally painfully slow install with two reboots, it didn't explode on me.

I've updated 2 PCs as well. One was a fresh install and another an existing system. Both were performed from the downloaded full SP1 executable. No problems but I did disable the third party security software first. I would guess that firewalls and real time A/V scanners cause many of the problems with major updates like this. There were a few patches required but that's to be expected since SP1 was finalized at least a month ago.

I have two Windows 7 boxes that I started the download/install on. The first desktop has a Sandforce SF-1200 based SSD, the 2nd doesn't.

The SSD machine took less than 10 minutes to complete the download/install, reboot, and get back to the desktop. The box that is still using spinning rust for storage took about 30 minutes!
