if phone calls into my house are being awnsered by the alarm , what can i do ? the alarm should be able to be programmed ? i know the alarm calls out on its own to the monitoring station , but the alarm picks up incoming calls and callers hear tones , like fax .

Isn't this something you should call the alarm company about? Sounds like something is not correctly wired.

the programming of the alarm has to be setup to wait until about 8 or more rings before it picks up. Having it set to answer is so the alarm company can program the alarm from there office or look into any types of faults like false alarms or low battery. Get them to reset the number of rings before it picks up

I agree about the wiring. If the alarm is not seizing the line, causing people to hear the alarm calling out to the station, it sounds like it's not wired for priority/line seizure over the other jacks in the house.
From my training/experience, alarms are supposed to be wired like this: Phone line from outside ---> Alarm "in" (red/green pair) Phone jacks from inside ---> Alarm "out" (black/yellow) *Better to have each jack terminated on a block instead of all the pairs twisted together. This is so that the alarm cuts off the phone jacks in an alarm situation so that someone can't just pick up the phone and prevent the alarm from dialing out. I don't know too much about alarms, but it seems to me that alarm control panels check for dial tone (or at least phone line voltage) every so often (5 or 10 minutes?) and if it goes away, most systems make the keypad beep to indicate trouble. I've personally experienced this with another phone company's service in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT on 2 different occasions Sorry if that's a little long.

it sounds like the alarm IS seizing the line, but when a call comes in, the alarm is dialing, when it should be "detecting" a dial tone first before calling out to the monitoring station. there might be a change in configuration to "wait for dialtone" before it calls out, otherwise it should hang up and try again acording to the retry parameter
