I've just switched from Rogers internet to Bell's Fibe 12 package and I've noticed that my internet access is annoyingly spotty if I'm trying to do two (or three) things at once. If I'm only in my browser, I get the advertised download speed but if I start up my computer and my Dropbox updates or, for example, if I'm downloading a file in iTunes then launch my browser (Firefox), it just sits there waiting until one of the other tasks is done.
Anyone else experience this? I don't see what difference it would make, but I'm on a MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB RAM and a 7200-rpm HDD so it's not a slow machine.

It is possible that your download software or Drop Box software may be grabbing all the resources. Some of these programs have setting that can be changed to set a maxium resource use for the program.

Harryhoo,
Could be. But when on Rogers, I NEVER noticed this issue. In fact, I have the same setup at work and there's never a problem there either (also on Rogers internet). That's why I was asking if it was a Bell issue because I never encountered this issue until I switched to Fibe.

It's definitely not a problem with the MacBook. If I had to wager a guess I would suspect a problem with the router or modem.

I had the same problem before with my Fibe12 at my apartment in Waterloo - I found that if I was on my PS3 and my laptop at the same time, the DNS server resolves at an awfully slow rate.
I switched the default DNS server to Google's public DNS and that worked wonders. Maybe you can try that too |

Yeah, I'll see if I can do that.
