Default Quick question concerning HDMI audio out verses Optical audio out?

I have a 9141 Bell reciever connected to a Denon AVR 4308CI via HDMI. For programing that is presented in 5.1 Dolby, am I getting the 5.1 through the HDMI setup, or would I benefit more with routing the audio through an optical cable?

Thanks Cobra

The HDMI is the easiest and preferred route. If you are not getting 5.1 then its a setup issue (or the broadcast is simply not presented in 5.1)

Here's the FAQ on DD5.1 audio. The DD5.1 signal will be the same via HDMI or optical, provided you have the appropriate settings on the PVR and the AVR:

Thank you (Hugh and 57) for the speedy replies. I can confirm that I am recieving 5.1 via HDMI but I also found out a couple of interesting things. Firstly the PVR (Bell 9241) should be set to "line mode" in the Dolby Digital sub menu and not "RF mode". "RF mode" boosts dialogue while suppressing effect sounds. Secondly I noticed many channels that actually provide a 5.1 signal, others that provide 5.0 and some simply PCM 2.0 channels. I only looked at the HD channels so by no way is this a comprehensive analysis.

Thanks again.........Cobra
