WKBW-DT is now broadcasting in HD

WKBW is now broadcasting ABC Primetime programming in HD. Tonight is the first night. Looks really good, and the audio is loud, unlike ABC Detroit.

I also noticed this tonight. I was surpised when during commercials, I flipped over and noticed "My Wife And Kids" in Widescreen, and in the proper aspect ratio. Good to see it. Hopefully they get their electronic guide up and running again. They had it working a few weeks ago.

I'm looking forward to some HDTV sports programming on ABC because I don't watch any other shows on that channel. Aside from sports, FOX and the WB get most of my viewing time.

I live very close to Buffalo and can receive WGRZ, WIVB and WUTV plus a few others but I can not tune in WKBW. I have tried at prime time, such as last night to view A Beautiful Mind and I know it wasn't carried in HD by WKBW. All I wanted was to confirm that I could receive WKBW. All I got was "weak signal" indicated on my screen from my RCA DTC100. Ran the "channel search/quick search" but could not find signal. Any help concerning WKBW would be appreciated.

A Beautiful Mind was indeed carried in HDTV last night. Came in OK from WKBW for me.

Hey Rico whats your location ? I have the same problem I use to be able to receive WKBW all the time and about 3 weeks ago I cannot lock on signal either.

I have 2 Hughes E 86 stb's and I tried both just to compare and they were both the same.

I emailed engineering at WKBW and here is their reply

Hello Bob,

With out getting to technical there are many things that can effect signal reception which includes path loss, multipath, interference, polarization distortion and effects of earth and surrounding objects. On the web there are many resources to explain the above cause and effect examples.

I too have had a loss of signal strength at home and it was due to RF path loss. RF path loss was caused by trees growing leaves. I corrected the problem at my home located near Lake Ontario by raising the height of my antenna above the trees and my signal improved with no wavering. At our studios in downtown Buffalo we had to do a similar thing by relocating the antenna.

I can understand your frustration with reception issues. Unfortunately Mother Nature doesn't always corporate with us.

I live in Thorold which is between St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, Ontario. I wonder were MowerX is located since he is not having the reception problem that we are experencing. I also was receiving signal up to about 3 weeks ago. I thought maybe WKBW may have been playing around with their power output, but after seeing the reply from WKBW engineering that is not the case.

Frustration continues!!!

I live in the North end of St Catharines. 38 is the strongest signal
from Buffalo's south tier. I can not lock 33 (WGRZ) except in the morning.
For me 38 (WKBW) has been solid since they came on.

Rico can you pick up CITY-HD (53) in Thorold?

Apparently some jackasses have been calling Mr. Morton (Chief Engineer at WKBW) on his cell phone in the middle of the night to harass him about the problems with HDTV.

He claims its because his cell phone number was published on this forum and has threatened to seek legal action against this site because of it.

I don't know if this is true but I did find a phone number posted here for the WKBW office (since removed) as well as an edited post so I can't confirm or deny but..

Going forward anyone found posting phone numbers for any phone numbers other than Corporate phone numbers found in the public domain will be banned from this site and their IP address and email address will be forwarded to the injured party so that the injured party can act accordingly.

The only phone numbers published on this site should be Corporate phone numbers ones that can be found on a company website or are advertised.

Therefore it would be fine to publish the contact phone number of WKBW which can be found on their contact us page but nothing else.

No personal phone numbers, direct phone lines or cell phones should ever be posted.
