Thumbs up Roger Waters: "The Wall"

Some friends and I caught the show last night at Scotiabank Place here in Ottawa. We had good seats for what was a most excellent bit of rock 'n' roll theatre:
- great music (the entire "Wall" album, of course);
- stunning visuals provided by an impressive projection system that could handle any combination of images (moving and still) on any scale (the entire wall or any part(s) of it) at a brick-by-brick level (and there were well over two hundred bricks in the wall); and
- some cool props, too.

The only cons, and they are very minor:
- Watching RW shuffle/dance like an old white guy at the front of the stage, when he should have been standing further back with the rest of the band. (Yes, I know, it's his show.)
- The distortion effect used by the guitarist. It added a bit of "dirtiness" to what should have been a clean, Gilmour-esque sound. That being said, the guitarist was very good and, aside from a bit of restrained wanking at the end of a couple of songs, he thankfully stayed true to the original licks.

All in all, a terrific show, well worth catching...if you can.

Wish I could have afforded seats...

I hope Waters releases a nice BD of one of the tour stops!

I recall seeing a similar production years ago on TV. I believe it was around the time of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, 21 years ago. It's funny you mention this since I listened to my cassette tape of The Wall, recorded from Vinyl 30 years ago in 1980, just this week - first time in probably 5 years. Sounded very good indeed and not much different from a CD borrowed from a friend over the weekend.

If he does release one, I'll be buying it.

I've heard nothing but good things as well. I've got row 20 on the floor for the upcoming Vancouver show. Thanks for the review.

I think I will order the SACD of Dark Side of the Moon. I have one of the old PS3s that still does "everything"

For those interested, the entire concert from Sunday in Ottawa is up on Youtube. Watched it last night.

If you'd like to demo it before buying, let me know (PM me). You're welcome to borrow my copy for a bit.

Yes. Available on DVD...

Roger Waters - The Wall: Live In Berlin 1990

That concert included an impressive list of guest artists, such as Van Morrison. Available on DVD, but not BluRay as far as I know. Appears to be available on amazon.

Saw RW - The Wall when it came through Toronto. Although I'm not a big Pink Floyd fan, I was impressed. First concert I've ever been to with surround sound (back speakers)!

Default In The Flesh

Ticket prices are astronomical but some friends got theirs for the Vancouver show.

If you can't make it and you are waiting to see if a BD version comes out, get Roger's In The Flesh DVD for now if you haven't already. It is of a concert featuring a selection of numbers spanning his career.

something of interest, or one of those completely useless bits of information

Diana Muldaur

She guest starred on the Gunsmoke episode, "Fandango" (1967), with James Arness. An excerpt of that episode's dialogue was sampled on the Pink Floyd album The Wall, after "Hey You" and before the brief song "Is there anybody out there?"

All you PF RW DG fans should give Porcupine Tree a listen, they replaced
them and Rush who I also liked a lot, they are currently becoming more well known and tour around a lot. Musical masterpieces.

The two concerts of The Wall in Toronto were without a doubt the highlight of this years artists coming through T.O. I just wish the audience were as good as the performers.

I have seen hundreds of concerts, all over the world but i have NEVER encountered as many 'fans' walking around and moving during the performance. There was a constant flow of Beer Carrying people up and down the aisles all night.

The shows were superb and were very well received, a slight problem with "Mother" on the second night but still awesome.

The attitude of the ACC Staff was fantastic. I had a disabled reletive over from England for the shows and the Staff went out of their way to make his life a little easier, he was very grateful.

Just as an FYI, "The Wall" will be on Mpix-HD several times during April. Next airing is April 4th, 9PM.
