Default Getting CC to work for HD channels on Motorola DCX3200

Hi so our family has this HD cable box. It's Motorola, model DCX3200. Our TV service provider is Shaw.

We have been trying to figure out how to enable the closed captioning for the HD channels. For SD channels, the closed captioning option on the TV remote seems to cut it, but it doesn't work for the HD channels.

My question is, how can you enable the CC for HD channels? I came across this post during my search online:

Quote:
To configure the DCX3200 settings on the User Settings menu screen:

Power off the DCX set-top box and then immediately press the menu key on the remote control. If your TV is on, a few seconds later the menu will list the settings that can be adjusted.

When selecting some of the menu choices, the lag between menus is a couple of seconds, and the tv screen will be black, but be patient and the menu will pop-up.

Some of the things you can tweak are:

what the tv type is 16:9, 4:3 letterbox, or 4:3 pan and scan,
what formats your tv supports,
video sharpness,
turn closed caption on and off when using hdmi or component outputs,
However, I'm not getting this "user settings" menu. Is this even the correct way to do it?

I would appreciate any help... thank you!!

Default Closed Caption

Is it one of the new "black" boxes with the time in large letters (white) on the front? If so, here's how I did it-don't use the remote
just use the touch sensitive spots on the front of the box itself, and you have to hit it fairly quickly, within about 15 sec. of hitting each button. turn the box off by hitting the power button on the front of the box, then hit power, then menu really fast, hold down the menu button until the basic setup screen pops up. Be patient and it should appear, that's what I did anyways, your mileage may vary

good luck

I have the DCT 3416 and those instructions are pretty close to what I have to do. The only change is pushing the menu button that is on the front of the box (i don't have a menu button on the remote).

Leave tv powered on
Turn off power on box
Push the menu button on front of box
Wait a few seconds - menu will appear
Scroll down to CC and select enable
Push menu button on front of box
Push power button

Maybe this will help you?

Is there a way to adjust the volume on this box instead of the TV?

I am using an HD monitor for this setup and using the RCA jacks for audio but the volume seems to be fixed. The HD audio seems to also be fixed.

Thanks

I can't comment on the DCX3200 specifically, but I have a DCT6412 that allows you to adjust the output volume of the box using the remote. (The box displays a volume level gauge at the top of the screen on the video output.)

You'd have to be sure the remote is sending volume codes for that box, because sometimes the remotes are programmed to only send volume codes for TVs even when you select the cable box on the remote. So maybe check the programming of the remote?

Swapped my SD box for DCX3200 today, and I don't like how it sends 480i for SD and 720p for HD. It results in long switch time between SD and HD channels. Rogers and Bell set-top boxes just sent video in 720p for everything. And the closed captions-- not only it's hard to switch them off or on, but the font looks very pixelated, like it's from the 1990s web. Is there a better font?

EDIT: I found out that I can just disable SD override.

Default Front IR port location

I've *SCOURED* the 'net looking for this info - where is this IR window (port) located on the DCX3200 P2 (M)? Want to test the IR Blaster from my Hauppauge Colossus...

Look here on "Page 3"

Could you not just plug into the IR extender into (port 7)

I think Shaw's 3200 is a different version. They have the one with the display on the front, I think.

I'm very sorry, Magnet - I wasn't clear in the text of my post, but the post title frames the nature of my request - I was looking for the location of the front IR receiver "window".

BTW, I have tried to "mate" the IR transmitter portion of the Hauppauge accessory cable to the IR receiver portion of the Moto IR extension cable, but with no success.

On digging, it appears that there has been mixed success in getting the DCX3200 P2 (which is what I have) talking with the Hauppauge IR Blaster s/w...

Is there a way to setup favorites, or better yet, delete certain channels and those within packages not subscribed to? I want the DC3200 remote channel button to only cycle between channels I want to see, not channels that require 'authorization' as they're not in my current service package.

I looked through the manual for the remote and DC3200, didn't see anything. Really not happy about having to direct-dial channels.

With the current guide software on all Shaw STB's there is no way to hide channels except using favorites lists. The Shaw Gateway does have the ability to hide channels. There should be a new guide software coming for the newer set top's but I haven't heard details on what functionality it will have.

I add all the channels that I get onto a Favorites list, delete the SD duplicates, and then I can browse the channels I subscribe to by pressing GUIDE, FAV.

There's a few caveats to doing this, like needing to manually edit the favorites list whenever Shaw adds a new channel line FOODHD, having to cycle through the guide starting at Channel 2, and not having free previews in the favorites list. Overall, though, it's faster than going through the entire list of channels.

Eventually, you will likely learn the channel numbers of the shows you watch most, and you'll find that ("direct-dialing") a lot faster than scrolling through the guide 4-6 channels at a time.

i'm not getting a consistent picture between my dcx3200 and my display. i get ~3 seconds of colour HD static, then a ~1 second flash of picture in a repeating pattern. i've gone through all the HDMI settings in the STB menu, and tried all the options on my monitor to no avail. shaw tech support currently has a four hour wait time... my setup is as follows:

motorola dcx3200 p2 hdmi out ->
HDMI cable -> hdmi/DVI adapter
-> DVI port on BenQ G2420HDB monitor

Monitor specs:
DVI-D input
1920x1280 native res @ 60hz
has HDCP
