This is classic and shows why when technology and marketing clash, marketing unfortuantely wins out. It is excerpted from
http://www.hdtvinsider.com/sample.html#HDTV Insider Newsletter - Part I

Mark Cuban is being asked about 720p or 1080i

GM: Many industry people including myself feel that 720 progressive is superior for sports due to its ability provide a picture free of motion induced artifacts. Why have you chosen 1080i? Is this choice set in stone or will you show programming in 720p?

MC: It is set in stone. Two basic reasons; You talk to ten people, you get five different choices. The deciding factor and the very, very, scientific research we did, 1080i is a bigger number. Also from a marketing perspective, it's easier to fight for 1080 than it is to fight for 720 against 1080.

Well, it's obviously not a short term proposition! However, next generation display devices like DLP, D-ILA, LCoS, etc., can and will get to 1920x1080p within the next few years.
