Have the Output Format set to 1080i and 4x3 override set to Off and TV Type set to 16x9 should stretch the guide out for you.

Which points out another pet peeve of mine with the 630. It does not remember separate zoom modes for SD and HD. That means I must change the aspect every time I watch a cropped or letterboxed SD channel and change it back for HD. Bell receivers remember different aspect modes for SD and HD channels. Ideally, it would be able to detect cropping and letter boxing and adjust the aspect ratio automatically based on predefined preferences. Some (free) HTPC software does this but I guess its too much to expect from a $400 Shaw PVR.

ScaryBob, have you tried using the 4x3 overrides in the video options menu? They are there to remove the letterbox format on standard def channels.

I will give that a try. I assume that works by letting the TV adjust to different aspect ratios based on picture format. I tried it once but my TV appears to adjust aspect ratio by physical input, not by picture format. The other catch is that some TVs do not do 480i to 1080p scaling well. Sometimes, that's better done in the PVR.

Default 630 Power Adapter specs/part number

Hello all,

Could a kind soul with a 630 close at hand check their power supply for the OEM part number and/or the specifications? I find myself with my PVR in one location, while the power adapter is 3 hours away.

I'm hoping I might have a serviceable item with similar polarity and voltage amongst my wall wart graveyard.

Thanks in advance.

Default 630 alternative power adapters

Just for future reference, if anyone encounters a similar situation.

I found I had 3 usable adapters on other e-gadgetry, 12V 2.0A units on a Macally external drive enclosure and a BlacX SATA dock, and a 12V 3.0A on a BlacX dual bay SATA dock.

A 2.0A seems to have been running fine using the 630 for live viewing and PVR playback the last few days, don't know if the extra juice would be required for recording.

My (second) 630 is now starting to exhibit a new problem. When I play a recorded program it skips the first 10-15 seconds of the program.

From day one both of the 630's exhibited the problem where you attempt to play a recorded program and it plays for a second or 2 then stops playing. You then have to call up the same program for a second time and press play again.

I wonder how long this 630 will last?

This post should have been in the Shaw Direct 630 Official Problems thread. Mod, if you can move it that would be great.

Thanks

Default DSR 630 TUNE LED light on

Our 8 month old DSR 630 Tune LED light is on, message on TV says it is looking for satellite signal. The PVR section works fine and we can watch previously recorded programs, the TUNE light goes off when watching recordings.
One of our DSR 505 works fine when using either of the two cables.
So I hooked the 630 back up, same problem.
After a number of reboots, I finally did a factory reset on the 630.
TV message then said my authorization had expired and I needed a receiver refresh to restore programming.
After the refresh, channel 500 came on clear and all.
When I tried to tune to another channel, the Tune LED light came back on, and the same old message on TV says looking for satellite signal.
Is the tuning section in the receiver dead?
Any ideas?

This might sound like a silly question, but did you get Shaw Direct to restore your programming after the factory reset or did you do it all yourself? If you did it all yourself, I'd suggest calling Shaw Direct tech support and doing the whole thing again but with their assistance when it's time to restore your specific programming. It might make a difference. Your 630 might be kaput for some reason, considering the cables seem fine based on what you did. But you could try another full factory reset regardless.

Default External hard drive?

I've just purchased a Motorola 630 and would like to know if anyone's had any success adding an external hard drive to one.

I'll be getting rid of a Rogers PVR that I've been using because of a move and I'd like to move the hard drive that I'm using with my Rogers to my new Shaw PVR. I know that all programming will be lost but I'm wondering if my new Shaw unit will even accept an external hard drive.

Thanks for any insight.

External drive capability is not currently available. It is supposed to be available with the next software update.

I have a new 630 and I am trying to understand the guide for recording. I have 2x530s. when I set a manual timer, it would insert the program name that it actually recorded. This one just says Manual Timer #NNN.

I tried to record the Lang and O'Leary Exchange on CBCNN 5 days a week. With Smart Record, it was recording it 6 times a day, first on NN and then at every replay on CBC stations for 24 hours. So I did a manual timer. Well it used both feeds to record it today, once for the guide version and again for the manual timer.

What am I doing wrong?
