My 3GS is now updated. It took about ten minutes to download the update and ten to fifteen minutes to update. It also downloaded and installed a carrier setting update.

Once installed I had four apps to update. Don't know if this is for multitasking since I understand that, for multi-tasking, apps must be updated (I may be wrong about that so don't quote me!) or it could just be a coincidence.

I think you are right Hugh - I think apps need to be updated to make use of the multitasking. I have seen a few app updates stating the reason being iOS4 and multi-tasking.

From what you posted, it seems that only certain things will continue to run in the background controlled by the API provided by iOS4.

Yup, I think Pandora Radio was the first app to go live that makes use of the new multitasking APIs.

Just noticed the 4.0 firmware for iPhone4 is 579MB! 200MB more than 4.0 for the 3GS. I wonder what all that extra stuff is for?

I also wonder when we'll even see some beta testing of 4.0 for the iPad.

I finished installing. Folders are pretty good for organizing. I only have about 12 apps not in folders now.

Dissapointed that I can't get the iBooks app for my iPhone to install though. Maybe it is US only? The iPhone one I mean.

The download itself didn't take long, but backing up my 3G is taking forever on my MacBook...

So how do you know if an app is multi-tasking or shut off?

In the past, just opening another app shut the other one down.

Dev's have to update their apps to support it. So if you get updates for your apps look at the OS version it has been tested on and the notes should tell you if it is Multitasking aware.

I think you can get the app from the following link (should launch iTunes and bring it up). I'm downloading it right now in itunes

The backup of my 3G phone is taking FOREVER ALSO. I don't even know if it'll be done in time for me to leave the office in 2.5 or 3 hours.
