My use of the PS3 breaks down to around 70/15/15 between BD/media streaming/gaming. While it's used most of the time watching movies, the ~15% gaming is an important part of its usage.
I'm not really that big on online gaming and consider myself a casual gamer.

When I was looking to buy a game console, it was the BluRay capabilities and the compatibility with my G25 racing wheel (which I had purchased for use with my PC) that tilted the scales toward the PS3. I would probably have bought a Wii otherwise.
My last console was a Sega Genesis, so I had no existing games for which compatibility was an issue. |

50/50 home theatre and gaming for me. In the age of convergence, having an all-in-one was very appealing to me. Even though Sony had been late to the game for next generation gaming consoles, it was obvious to me even in 2006 that the hardware was far more future proof than anything else out there.

The report was correct. I bought PS3 for the same reason. I sold the console when the price of standalone Blu-ray player dropped below $200.

I think people are misinterpreting the survey. Buying it as a BR player is different that buying it because it has BR. If someone had to to choose between a 360 and a PS3 the BR is a feature because having the PS3 means not needing to buy a stand alone player.

i agree with you. the ps3 still has a little to go to catch up with the 360 in terms of TOTAL sales, but since the ps3 is selling soo much faster than the 360 as we speak its imminent the ps3 will outsell the 360 (very very soon) ( i give it 1 year ) and they will have surpassed them. imo though the ps3 has the best games in the "console war". i mean 3 game of the years in a row?! that says enough. not to mention many MANY other games that have blessed the playstation 3.
EDIT: i would also like to add the 360 had a 1 and a half year advantage, and its being caught up to. |

I realize you prefer the PS3 based on your comments, but your facts need to be accurate and unbiased.

I remember friends justifying a PS2 over 10 years ago by the fact it played DVDs. I think the same thing is happening. Anyone that shares expenses etc. with a significant other knows that it's MUCH easier to sell a PS3 just by stating that it plays BRs. This being said, IMO it's incorrect to assume that people buy the PS3 just for the BR capabilities. That may have been true a few years ago but right now if someone just wants BR they have a plethora of options in standalone players that are much cheaper than the PS3. Folks who buy a PS3 today buy it because of everything that it does, including BR (and of course gaming). |
