It appears ALL of the DAB transmissions in Canada have now ceased. The last audible station on DAB was CFNY (albeit highly distorted :-) ) when the L3 ensemble vanished last Friday. L4 went late February, and the much publicized canning of DAB by the CBC in January 2011.

Whether Canadian radio stations want to invest in HD Radio for better sound, or have to to accommodate more players remains to be seen.

Dael, I'd be very interested if you tried a re-tune with your radio from the spot you had the Toronto stations and confirm my observations of no reception. This would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard that DAB also has been shut down in Ottawa also.

One things for certain, I'd listen to more OTA radio if one, the sound was a lot better and two, a digital system was used that would combat severe multipath. When it comes in consistently, HD2 on 88.7 WBFO (On The Border) and HD2 on WTSS 102.5 (Delta Blues) are both a real treat sonically and in content.

Sound quality will never be a selling point with the general public.

Satellite has done very well gaining subscribers with poor sound quality, and there are millions of iPods is use every day playing 128k Mp3s through crappy white earbuds.

FM can be (and usually is) better than both of these, so an upgrade is moot.

Signal quality, on the other hand, has potential.

Now we're heading into the twilight zone here....

L4 with CFRB, MIX 99.9, (yes I know it's rebranded some time ago), THE FAN (silent), EZ ROCK (rebranded), JAZZ FM on it has returned to ON-AIR status.

This spectrum is due for auction as some point.

With everything else off-air, why is this back?

DAEL, it appears there's to be a short blast of DAB left for your radio.... :-)

Default I will check

I will check this week to see if there is anything. I sent an email to ezrock and received a reply that there may be some work taking place at the CN Tower. He was surprised I had a DAB radio and he said he is an avid user. He didn't indicate it was going forever.

If they fix the left channel and bring the overall audio up by 20dB maybe I'd listen a lot more... :-) As it is, it's best if they just remove it from the ensemble...

Now the real interesting part of your post... and inquiring minds want to know.... What work might take place on the CN Tower?

Hmmm...

Default DAB Working

I checked from Hamilton at 1pm today to see what was working. These are the results:

EZ Rock - working - strong signal

Jazz FM - working - strong signal

Mix 99 - working - strong signal

The Fan - Nothing playing - strong signal

CFRB - working - strong signal

Something I don't understand is these stations all seem to be working better at further distances than they did a year ago. Not being too technical but I don't know why.

Dael, wait till the leaves come back.... :-) Or it's a hot humid windy day. L-Band has trouble with long distances and those conditions. That's my experience since listening since 2003.

There is buried in the menu's of that radio a method of finding out more about the stream info, such as bitrate, .mp2, etc. I'd love to see what it reports for "THE FAN".... Testing on my Perstel shows there being no stream data or a problem with it in other ways.

The DAB L4 ensemble with CFRB, Jazz FM, EZ-ROCK & MIX 99.9 has vanished again.

Will someone please plug in the extension cord? :-)

L4 ensemble has returned to being on-air. No changes noted in setup.

The L4 DAB Ensemble continues to broadcast in Toronto even with the extreme heat we're experiencing lately.

In past years, all the commercial DAB ensembles (except the CBC) would be shut down when temperatures exceeded 29 deg. C. Even with today's 37.5 deg. C record at Pearson International Airport, L4 remained on-air.

DAB L4 is the only Ensemble broadcasting in Toronto, all the others have gone silent.

Interesting....

Default Beyond comprehension.

This defies total logic:

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2011/2011-559.htm

Today, it appears almost ALL of the DAB licenses (except CBC, which gave theirs back) have been renewed until April 30th of 2012.

Many of these never got to air, and none in Atlantic Canada were included in the renewal.

Truly bizarre....

Default L4 Status update

The on-off-on-off-on nature of the L4 ensemble from Toronto continues.

It's back up.

CFRB - No audio now
Mix 99.9 - Audio OK
The Fan - No Audio
EZ Rock - No Audio
Jazz FM - Audio OK.

As a fan of FM-HD (as far as I've heard much) and from what little I've read about DAB implementation in Canada, any comment I might make would seem discourteous.... if that comment isn't discourteous enough.

Since Mr. Harper is such a fan of continental integration, maybe his ministers should look into HD?

Hey Ben,

Discourteous maybe, but unfortunately true.

The technological missteps that have been going on in the broadcasting field in the last 30 years here is very frustrating to say the least.

AM Stereo
DAB
HD Radio (no traction yet)

Most engineering staff aren't the problem, in fact most are simply terrific.

We have no real incentive coming from IC, or the Government to set standards (look at the mess with ATSC digital TV).

Broadcasters aren't interested either.

The "digital divide" will only get wider with various forces wanting a "paid for information" system in place spanning all technologies.

At least that's the direction some sure want us to go in....

I enjoyed DAB in the UK and Europe, I used DAB at home and in my vehicles.
The quality and coverage were good, and the equipment was not that expensive.
The destruction of DAB in Canada is a real shame.

Is Canada only interested in "paid for" services?
