Yeah, kind of like I guessed. It doesnt do anything for vhf-low either.

Nikiml,

I have a question regarding the top of the tophat narod. You mention that it should be tilted so it is close to the plane of the top hat reflector. I was wondering if there would be any value in having another reflector for the top of the tophat? Perhaps you already answered this and I missed it.

lenl,

I am not sure I understand the question. Do you mean something like this model:

Default TopHat

Nikiml,

Yes, that is sort of what I was looking for although it looks like your GH10 has 2 reflectors sitting above the top of the tophat. I was just thinking about the impact of 1. In any event if looks like there is value to adding some more reflectors to interact with the top of the tophat for even better VHF reception?

Also does it really make an impact if those 2 reflector rods are in 2 pieces so you have 4 elements as opposed to a just one piece straight across for each one? I hope my question makes sense to you. I'm asking because it is simpler to build this with one large piece of metal than 2 pieces for each element. At least for me.

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to figure out how to get a setup running for my location. (Brampton, Torbram & Williams Pkwy)

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...60b57fe40b2152

I went to Save and Replay, and their suggestion was to go with a CM8 for $100, and if I could, to use an eaves mount on my roof. I would then need the necessary coaxial cable, connectors, crimping tool, cutting tool, grounding wire and grounding rod. So all told, I'd be looking at investing at $230.

However, I've never done OTA before, and I'd like to test-run it before I make a massive investment. I could buy the CM8, stick it on a broomstick and see what I get, but then I'm out the 20% restocking fee.

I figure, for around $20, I could probably build the GH10n3 highlighted here. I have an EE degree, so electromagnetics and antennas are not outside of my scope of understanding. I can do this.

My question is about construction and materials. I understand the schematics shown on nikiml's site, but they just show you the dimensions and placement of each of the antenna's elements. Is there a bill of materials and full schematic? Or do I have to come up with it on my own? Where can I find the necessary parts and materials? How much can I expect to spend? How long to build it?

I've wanted to do this for the longest time, so I'm excited about getting into this. Any and all help is appreciated!

re: TopHat
Well, it seems that long colinear reflectors around the hat do increase the VHF-hi gain.
About the gapless reflectors question, I have never tried that.

Also I have never tried maximizing the VHF-hi gain by itself, instead I have always tried to get balanced UHF/VHF/hi gain.

So, yes - there are more options to be investigated about getting more VHF-hi.
The latest version of my nec.opt scripts seems to work very well and is much faster than what it was when I started.

Currently I am rerunning the Modular GH4n with it and I get considerable improvement on the VHF-hi gain.

What exactly are your VHF-hi gain requirements? May be we can try to push the GH in that direction.

Hi HorizonXP,

I don't remember seeing complete bill of materials for any of my antennas.

As for the antenna choice I am in a somewhat similar situation as you (Derry&Churchill),
and I am thinking of building UHF only directional antenna pointed towards Buffalo
and bidirectional VHF-hi pointed at Hamilton/Barrie.

In your exact situation I'd try this GH8, which whn pointed at Buffalo should get you Toronto from 30 degrees ( since VHF-hi 7 from Buffalo seems out of reach for you).

And if you want /A\ and CHCH add (pointed at Hamilton/Barrie) a Hentenna for 192Mhz or something like that:
Code:
CM
CM Sweep ranges:
CM R0 = (186, 6, 4) with target levels (6.5, 6.5)
CM SWR target: 2
CM Target function: max(max_swr_diff, .5*ave_max_gain_diff+.5*ave_gain_diff)

You'll have to join the two with 5 dolar uhf/vhf-hi coupler (cjuv)

But I should note that I have seen many complains about the receive-ability of CHCH and some about /A\ as well.
May be others can share their experience.

And if you want to build single antenna it should be one of the GH6n, GH8n or GH10n.

I believe the best place to buy the aluminum rod in your area is Metal Supermarket.
Most build a structure from pvc pipe and fittings. The grey electrical pvc pipe is cheaper than the white pvc pipe, but you can use the white pvc fittings with it.
With careful shopping a GH10n3 should be less than $30 in materials and can be built in an afternoon. A GH8n3 is even less in time and materials.

Here's my current plan to build the GH10n3:

Get some ALUMINUM ROUND 6061T6 from Metal Supermarkets. Their online quote is telling me that 52' of 0.25" will cost $27.83, while the same length of 0.188" will cost $35.66. I'm hoping that the in-store price could be a bit cheaper, or that I can get a student discount.

I figure I could follow the plans from this Instructable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Gray...mbly/?ALLSTEPS or http://www.casano.com/projects/hoverman/index.html to create the framing.

I'll see if I can plan this out in some 3D modelling program. I'd prefer to know how I'm going to cut and assemble the PVC pieces before I set out to do this.

So on top of aluminum round, all I need is PVC pipes and fittings, a balun, and some coax cable. That should get me an antenna that will pull in all the stations I want, provided I mount it sufficiently on my roof.

Under $50 maybe?

HorizonXP - I recommend drafting a list of the lengths of rod you need and have the metal shop do the cutting. I would also take along a paper template of the active element and have them bend the rod. After all, they probably have the equipment to make the finished product look nice. And it is so much less trouble if you don't have the right equipment.

Note that the Casano model is a double bay GH; you might only need a single bay GH antenna if you have a clear shot to the transmitters.

I have made 2 single bay GH so far and I discovered that 1/16" copper coated welding wire is very effective for all elements. It has a steel core that adds strength. I bought 99 feet of the stuff in 3 foot lengths for $8 dollars from Princess Auto.

My GH are strictly used indoors in my condo so I was able to make both from kiln dried wood. I am using a Kitz Technologies KT-100VG as an amplifier to increase the signal strength of some of the stations. Having tried the welding rod version at 2 indoor locations, I am impressed at how well it performs under less than ideal conditions (the amplifier helps).

Have fun!
