Default Thunder Bay to lose CBC on TBTV

Thunder Bay, Ontario
Application No. 2010-0204-7
Application by Thunder Bay Electronics Limited to amend the broadcasting licence for the television programming undertaking CKPR-TV Thunder Bay.

The applicant states that it has been unable to negotiate a new program supply agreement with the CBC.
First CTV to Global and my guess of CBC to CITY (much like Prince George/ and indirectly CFJC Kamloops).

How will I watch Leafs lose in SD? lol

This is worst than the CTV to Global because Shaw does not have any CBC in their Timeshift channels for Thunder Bay.

Eh, don't worry, i'm sure Shaw will replace the local CBC with another CBC, possibly CBC Toronto.

They will. I'm pretty sure that the cable regulations require a regional owned-and-operated station on the basic Service.

It's very strange that the only CBC owned-and-operated OTA station on Shaw TB right now is CBLT-HD. No SD at all.

Reading between the lines in the application, it looks like CKPR is just trying to cover its bets in negociations with the CBC. Since the previous affiliation agreement pointed to ending the CBC affiliation in 2011 anyway, it doesn't make sense for the CRTC to insist on an affiliation with the CBC that the CBC is not willing to pay for or even agree to without payment.

Time are changing. It used to be that a network would pay an affiliate to carry network programming. Now economics have shifted, many networks are now requiring that affiliates pay them if they carry network programming.

It looks like that by 2015, the CBC will not have any English language private affiliates anymore.

How will Thunder Bay watch Hockey Night In Canada? I think Hockey Night In Canada will eventually move to TSN. This is a good thing since our tax dollars will no longer be wasted on paying those exorbitant salaries to Don Cherry and Ron McLean. What is it that they are being paid? Isn't it around 7 million between them.

The CBC gets about $1 billion in taxpayer funding and you're worried about a measly $7 million. Last I heard, Hockey Night in Canada is one of the few CBC programs that actually makes money for them. So forgive me, why again is it a good thing that HNIC will eventually move to TSN?

As for the topic of this thread, it doesn't surprise me that we're seeing some disaffiliations. The networks have more direct avenues to reach their target audience nowadays, which is why I think the economics have shifted like cslusarc is saying. It's becoming a case of the affiliates needing the networks more than the networks needing the affiliates.
