As far as following in Toyota's footsteps go, I wouldn't mind it if Sony did a recall and physically replaced the problem chip.

Well I just did my nice deed for the day. Saw on my local kijiji a person selling a 60gb PS3 for $75.00 saying that it was broken and that he was getting the network error 8001050F. I emailed him and told him that by all rights his PS3 is fine and that it was a PSN problem.

lol... my good friend started losing his mind earlier yesterday, thinking his PS3 was broke. He was going to go to GameStop to trade it in. I bought it from him on the spot.

I'm going to make him sweat for a day or two, then give it back.

So, did Sony actually do anything as far as actively correcting the problem, or did they just wait until the internal clock ticked over to March 2nd and declared that they had 'fixed' the issue?

I don't see Sony recalling 10M+ consoles to fix a chip that causes the console to stop working for 24 hours every 4 years. Perhaps they will release a patch that will at least allow you to play offline if the bug were to hit in 2014.

That would work. Implement also an optional replacement upgrade like they did for the PSX and many will be happy. Well the one that bought their unit between the PS2 RC model and the slim one.

Either way, this is nothing compared to the RROD issue on another unnamed console.

If it was going to auto fix itself in 24hrs then why would they have rushed out an emergency firmware. I'm a dev and I would have done the same thing. Just patch it in the next scheduled firmware update. Why risk a rushed untested firmware update that might cause even more problems

They put out a firmware update? This is the first I've heard about that.

No, they didn't update the firmware. The problem fixed itself at midnight GMT.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but rawd's post made it sound like there was an update, which was the first I had heard of that (I assumed he was wrong since I troll lots of gaming sites).
