I don't think they get the OK to simsub. I think the are REQUIRED to simsub by the CRTC.

I believe you misinterpretted. They must simsub if asked by the broadcaster (and the broadcaster always asks). What BTV got the OK for from the CRTC, was Canada-wide subbing instead of localized subbing based on where they should be allowed to sub by law. BTV do not have the capability to sub by the STB postal code like Shaw Direct (SD), however, it appears that SD are going Canada-wide now too - read the SD forum.

As discussed in that thread in the Shaw Direct forum, this will all soon be moot with HD OTA transmitters located so they cover all the major centers in Canada making Canada wide subbing de facto.

Experienced a number of audio drops during the sim-sub of CSI last night. The sim-sub is from Alberta as has been the case for the last couple of weeks.

Default Simsub using unsubscribed channels...

With the old French basic package + US West, channels in the latter will get simsubbed with Vancouver stations to which we're not subscribed.

Kind of interesting.

I'm sure Bell could find a better way to simsub other than to blanket the whole country.

I wish Bell could do Simsubs the way they do blackouts as in certain parts of the country at certain times vs all, but thats not ever going to happen.

It's not Bells' idea to do the simsubs. It's the CTRC that makes all the cable and sat suppliers do it. They know everyone would watch the actual US feed if they could and that is anti Canadian. You must watch the Canadian feed when available. That is why I will never give up my OTA antenna.

Blackouts are "calculated" by the receiver using the blackout string and "zip code" (I don't know how Bell translates this to postal codes) stored in the card. They do not require any additional bandwidth. Your idea would require them to stream two different signals. Multiply this by the number of simsubbed channels, and you'll understand why they do coast to coast simsubbing.

Not Bell's nationwide simsub. Simsub is required to all within the Canadian station's broadcast coverage area.

If Bell simsub for a station I don't see how can they do it for only one region. The same sats and transponders are used across the country. They would need double the transponders to do it for some and not others.

It would be possible if they used spot beaming, but they don't. Right now it would require them to stream both signals nationwide and have the receiver "choose" which stream to display. Not going to happen.

agreed a spot beam sat should work for "proper" simsubbing. Its never going to happen but would be nice if Bell looked into this.

I remember when I was with Bell, everything was simsubbed. Every prime time shows, by CTV, Global, CityTv, A-Channel, Sporting events on NBC, ABC, .... simsubbed by TSN. Jay Leno, David Letterman subbed by A-Channel and Omni. Even the superstations were subbed by stations from NewFoundland sometimes. I found it very annoying. Every time you watched something, you were switched to a different station feed at the end of each show. They would tell you, coming next on City, The bachelor, then you get switched to CTV and the show would be CSI. You get lost every night, wondering what the hell am I watching.
I am in Montreal, with Videotron now, simsubbing is minimal on HD channels, usually only 2 US networks out of 4 get simsubbed at the same time, by Global HD and CTV HD. Two networks stay with the original american feed.
I am often tempted to go back to Bell, because of the wider selection of HD english channels. But I think back of the simsubbing and I decide to stick with Videotron.

Simsub is controlled by the CTRC not the provider. If the same program is on a Canadian station at the same time it has to be simsubbed.

Not if the station is not from your area, and available over-the-air in your area. Why should I get commercials from Toronto, instead of Boston, if I live in Montreal? And TSN is not available over-the air in any city in Canada, so they should not simsub a golf tournament on NBC, for example.
