Ok...I'm debating seeing the latest Scorcese flick tomorrow (Sunday) Metacritic gives it a 63 overall (out of a possible 100) and Now Magazine gave it 2 "N's"...neither are especially high praise. Now, "Avatar" was in the 80's on Metacritic...so you can't always trust it (I wasn't a fan BTW)
Anyone seen this movie yet? Should I skip the gym and go (I'm an ugly slob...I really need the gym LOL) Please advise! |

Well, some people think it's his worse movie ever.
Ghost Writer seems to be getting high praise though. |

Why did he have to pick Leonardo DiCaprio as his new favorite actor

His worst movie ever? They must have not seen After Hours...
Anyway, Shutter Island wasn't written by him so it isn't a "typical" Scorsese film. It isn't great, but it isn't bad either. I thought the story was pretty good for a thriller. I wish I hadn't seen the trailer, as some of the better/more powerful shots of the movie are in it. Also it makes the movie look more like Silence of the Lambs, which it is not.

Just got back from seeing it with my gf. I really enjoyed it, and we talked about it the whole way home, which rarely happens with most movies. The editing in particular was quite interesting.
I think it suffered from poor marketing. This is in no way a horror film. There were maybe a couple of sudden frights, but this is not a scary movie. I think a lot of people will be disappointed as a result. Much of tonight's audience sounded unimpressed as the credits appeared. I would recommend it, and I'll be watching it on Blu-ray or even catch it again in the theatre to catch some things I missed the first time around. If you liked this, check out the brilliant Session 9, and vice versa.

I was debating seeing this, but I loved Session 9, so if it is in the same genre as that I'm in!

Saw Session 9 years ago...great flick..creepy & weird...good combo!
Gonna go to Shutter Island in about an hour...fingers crossed! I actually like DiCaprio...more & more with each film. He seems to be moulding his career in a similiar way to a DeNiro-type actor. Interesting roles, fairly challenging characters etc. You never see him in stupidity like "Hangover" or "Superbad" kinda garbage. He seems to be be Scorcese's fav' go-to actor as well now (never a bad thing if you're an actor!!) I think most people would agree with me if he didn't still look like he was 21!! That may be a good thing for him in 20 years however LOL! You never hear of any BS in his private life ie. humping a dozen women whilst married, getting pinched for DUI, drug probs etc. He seems to keep out of the media spotlight and just concentrate on his craft. I have a huge appreciation for actors like that. My 2C. |

Actually, Leonado isn't "out of the media spotlight". Just recently, a woman was arrested in Toronto and had agreed to be extradited to LA to face a charge of assault and battery when she was at a party hosted by Jack Nicholson and she cut Leonardo pretty badly requiring a number of stitches. Not sure of the details or why or how she got invited to the party. I had always thought Jack was particuar about the company he kept.

Just got home from it, and it was a great film. Kept my attention the whole time.
Like most Scorcese films, there were a few shots / bits of music / lines of dialogue / etc. that I was iffy about... but you can't deny he has great style and is one of the greats. Definitely not a horror film. A heady thriller.

My girlfriend and I quite enjoyed Shutter Island. It had a Hitchcockian flavour to it, particularly the music. Plus, every shot was really beautifully composed. Story-wise, there's a twist I saw coming a mile away, but everything else was pretty rivetting. No complaints here -- we were talking about it the whole way home too, which is a good sign, considering the many instantly-forgettable movies out there.
cheers, supervij

I noticed you used "white" as a colour to hide the verbage. Spoiler tags are the words spoiler and /spoiler inside the [ ]
[SPOILER] [ /SPOILER] Remove the space in second line. |

Might just be a continuity blip. I noticed a couple hands up/hands down continuity screw-ups. I suppose most films have them. That scene might not have been filmed all at one time...coulda been hours apart.
If you go back to Jurassic Park...the egg hatching scene...one second the robotic arm is around the raptor egg, the next shot it's gone! You see this type of thing all the time. Regardless, I really enjoyed the film. Leo as always, was very intense & emotionally charged...he's a hard worker that's obvious. I can see why Scorcese likes him so much. So do I!! The rest of the cast was good too. Good to see 'ol Ted Levine in another film "Put the lotion in the basket!!!!" |

I love Session 9 (is it available on BD yet?), and I really like (not love) Shutter Island. I think it will be better if instead of Leonardo, the studio chooses somebody unknown.
