Thanks i6s1.

I spoke with the installer and he indicated that the assigned registration code for each of the boxes is generated and not based on any information from the box itself. The code is then linked in Telus' database to the boxes' unique MAC id's . I was wondering if this was a permanent link or is this a "temporary" link. The reason for my inquiry is that I would like to purchase a unused digital box from Craigslist. If the used box has say a sticker or the owner knows the registration code can I use that previously assigned code to register the used box on my account?

Thanks

No, the reg code can be removed from an STB by Telus easily enough, then you can use that reg code on another box.

Any previous reg code will be linked to the previous owners account. Since the main reason for selling the box is because the person canceled and no longer has an account, the previous registration code won't work - it won't exist in our system after an account has been canceled.

Hi we recently got Telus Optik tv installed in our home with 2 PVR one in the basement and one upstairs. The upstairs I live in is a seperate suite or unit from the main floor and basement. In the upstairs there is a small closet (living room area) where the line directly runs in and the TV is right there so that works good with the cable box, and my bedroom is just down the hall from where this is installed. I would like to get a 3rd box for my bedroom so I can watch Telus TV in there as I have a roomate and we dont have to share the same TV (We both live upstairs) if we want to watch something different, but thats where it gets confusing. The Telus tech said he couldnt find the line into my bedroom I guess there isnt one Im not sure? But he said I could go ahead and buy a Telus Box he would set it up but there is no guarantee's it would work. A big part of me wants to get the box and try and get it installed hopefully, I just find it strange we already have it installed upstairs on one TV and my room is only a few feet away and It wont work? I was also looking at maybe Shaw Cable for that room but the owners dont want drilling in the wall. Is it possible a different tech could maybe find the line? or could Telus install a new line for my bedroom? does that require major work?

If I go out and pay 150.00 for the box which includes installation and It doesnt work what are my options? Is the box just useless for me and Im SOL? Really fustrated I am living in an older area of Edmonton but thought it would be easy to also get a hook up for my bedroom. I always used shaw cable before and had 0 problems for additional outlets I do like the features of Telus TV though. Any advice Id appreciate it

I'm having optik installed soon and am wondering, do the installers supply switches if needed? I read earlier in the thread they had supplied gigabit dlink ones.. is that true?

I have cat5e run to each TV getting a reciever but they are being used by WDTV live units to access my network storage. I will need 2 switches to connect the telus boxes.

Thanks!

To answer my own question the installer didn't have switches, he ran cat 6 to my one TV, (easy access with unfinished basement), and used wall plates that made one cat5e cable into 2 "separate" cables on the upstairs one. Doing this does not support gigabit Ethernet (only 10/100) but the TV seems to be working. I have yet to try a 1080p mkv on the wdtv to see if it can handle it.

Note to anyone using Unblockus to get US programming, be sure to reset your DNS to automatic on your xbox before installing the Optik program, it installed but wouldn't initialize otherwise. The installer said this would really have confounded him if I wasn't there!

Default Optik TV on XBox - Installation Questions - Is a site visit necessary?

We are waiting for Telus TV install of the optik service. I have some questions.

1. Is it necessary to have an additional Set top box if all you are going to do is to use the single xbox and the single tv? (we do not plan to have it in any other part of the house)

2. Presently, the xbox is using cat5 cable to connect ot the Internet via a switch to the telus ActionTec router. Is it necessary to have additional cable installed by Telus between the router and the xbox?

3. If these things are not necessary, why does Telus need to make a service call? Could they not get me to find the MacAddress of the exbox and download the Telus Optik App and register that xbox on their system. Why do they need to come out and do a service call?

Thanks for your help.

@ Scruples98

The answer to Q1 and Q2 is No

Q3. A service call is required because Telus needs to install OptikTV software on your XBOX. You cannot get that software off the Telus site.

Scruples98 Keep in mind they recommend a 250gb xbox, I'm assuming for PVR functionality to work...

As for needing the telus software, when we did mine he put in the disc he brought but it gave an error and wouldn't install. I simply clicked on the optik button on the dashboard and it downloaded straight to the xbox just fine. Enter the code and thats it.

It's funny, I could have done my total 3 tv install in like 10min, (cat5e already to all tv's), but the way he did it it took 2+ hours...

Thumbs up Well that was simple...

Today we had Telus Optik Tv, Internet and phone installed in our apartment. The installer called us about 20 minutes before he arrived to let us know he had switched the phone over. The appointment was for 10am, and he was here at 10 on the money.
Once here, things went pretty quick. The only phone jack in the place happens to be right next to the home-theater, so that made things really easy. Installer just put a new jack on the wall, one outlet for phone, one for dsl. While he did that, I set up the hd box, plugged everything in and it worked.

I have only the one tv so surfing isn't impacted at all. I seem ( so far) to get around 23mbps, which is bang on.
(from the router/modem: Downstream Rate: 31494Kbps Upstream Rate: 3072Kbps)

So in the end, it was quick, easy and the installer was pretty decent.

Good start, Telus.

Having been with shaw this last decade, I was really conditioned to thinking this was going to be murder. But it wasn't. Not at all.

Default Couple install quesitons to clear up (FTTH)

Switching from Bell to Telus on Friday,

Got 1 PVR and 1 HD box to use for pvranywhere.

I am in a fiber community so I have fiber to the side of my house.

I assume from there they will run it to my panel and put it into some sort of Demarkation point?

Does the phone come in on Fiber or do they still bring it in on copper I would assume fiber or at least hope fiber?

If I am right about the demark point from there how does it go? I have 1 Cat6 line to each of my TV's and multiple RG6 lines to each as well.

My Cable modem and router are currently in my bonus room and would like to keep my router there and use it for the wireless as I have it setup how I want it.

I assume they will install some sort of switch in my basement and each STB will connect to that switch?
is there a DSL modem still or is the device the STB connect to the internet modem as well?

Thanks

Phone line will come in on the fibre as well. Fibre will connect to a box that will also have a UPS connected to it to keep the phone going in power outages. This first box has a telephone jack output to connect the phone line to all the phone jacks in the house and it has an RJ45 data jack to connect to a second box, the ActionTec combination DSL Modem / wireless router / hardwired 4 port router / HPNA adapter (used if coax were going to feed the aet top boxes). Set top boxes need to connect to this 4 port router through your CAT 6 cables if possible rather than via coax.

So if your CAT6 cables don't distribute from where your existing cable modem / wireless router are located ideally the ActionTec will be put where these cables distribute from. It might be possible to put the ActionTec where your existing cable modem is and them feed the other box(s) via existing coax.

Ok this will still work, Luckily I put in the conduit not the lines and i already have extra cat 6 in the conduit.

The Acitontec wifi can be turned off and I can use my Own wifi router correct? I have an Apple Time capsule so it is used as more then just a router it is a back up and and has an external drive.

So i can run the actiontec to my Time Capsule and from there it can run to the Switch the runs the rest of my house. Since I have 2 other servers running right now.

So I would go Fiber to the First terminal, The Phone would time into my phone network no issues, The RJ45 port would run to the actiontec with the Wifi off, The out put on that would run to STB 1 and STB 2 and then to my Router in bridge mode and my router would then feed the rest of my network. Since the TC supports bridge mode this should work perfectly, Got to get all this sorted out since i wont be home at install i will have to make sure my wife knows exactly what i need the tech to do.

thanks

Question

I'm switching sept 8 from shaw to telus. Ive had optik before. Which router etc should I ask for?

And like the previous post...which is a better set up?

I currently use shaw modem with router part disabled or wifi turned off.

Every other device connects wirelessly via my dlink 655 gigabit router.

Thanks
