Acronis Backup and Security 2010 is a new product from the people who make Acronis True Image. It is basically the True Image product integrated with a comprehensive security product that has an internet firewall plus virus, spam and spyware protection, parental and privacy controls plus security update management. As a one stop product it appears to be quite comprehensive. It's not free but at US$70 for a 3 PC license the cost is not unreasonable, especially since it replaces up to 4 separate products. I received an email promo upgrade to a True Image license for US$20 (regular price US$30.) So far, it appears to work well and is problem free. That's a nice change for a new product after experiencing numerous problems with new releases to some of the more established security products. (Symantec, McAfee and especially ZoneAlarm have trashed my system on numerous occasions.) For people who have been burned by other products and are tired of juggling freeware conflicts/updates, this looks like a decent alternative.
Disclaimer: I have no interest in Acronis or their products other than being a customer.

ScaryBob;
I was thinking of buying this package. Currently I have a i7 920 CPU server/htpc and a four laptops and four PC's in the home. All content on the server is backed up on JBOD using Synchback. WHS doesn't work for me as an all-in-one solution because it doesn't have the Media Center (I also have 5 extenders). I want a way to back up each PC/laptop, preferably storing the image on the server and when needed, burn a recovery disk. Is Acronis the best product to do this? Would I need more licenses? Or would I be better off buying the ACER H340 with 1 TB drive ($340 refurb) and using it just for image backups? I'm looking more for convenience than low price. |

Danno100 I use trueimage at the office to backup the important work stations to our server and it works great! Recovery works perfect but I would recommend you also buy the add on that allows to for baremetal restores that way if you ever want to upgrade your computer all you have to do is a restore and ill work on ANY new computer.
I really was impressed at how refined the product was. I can get this upgrade for I think it was $20 as well with an recent email from them, I might give it a go on one system and see how I like the newer version. Thanks for bringing this product to light for everyone ScaryBob!

Danno100, either True Image or Backup and Security will do the job. It doesn't really matter where the image is stored. Both products support a number of storage options, including Windows home networking (WHS, Samba, Windows PCs), networked drives, USB drives, internal drives and DVD/CD drives. Not sure about BD drives. It is a PITA to create a restore disc for some newer systems. The supplied boot disc does not always work so a Windows XP BartPE disc must be created. The restore disc supports any OS so that's not an issue.
A nice surprise with the anti-virus/malware scanner is that it supports networked drives. Even Linux Samba shares can be scanned, although slowly due to network speeds. Another thing to keep in mind is that the True Image license has no expiry, though technically it is only a single PC license. The recovery disc will back up any computer it boots on so it is a portable tool. Backup and Security is a 3 PC license but is only good for a year.

There's one huge caveat to this software if you think you're getting a deal by also getting True Image. You have to renew the license every year. You don't get a permanent license like when you buy True Image by itself.
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/8464 ATI2010 currently has several show-stopper bugs and support is practically non-existent. It took 5 weeks for my support ticket to be answered and I had to throw a fit on the forums for them to answer me. By that time, my 30 days free support had expired and I was SOL. |
