Default Restrictions Lifted: Rogers Sportsnet & TSN2 can show whatever sports they want.

Last week, the CRTC granted approval to Rogers Sportsnet to air an unlimited amount of national programming.
Sportsnet, a regional service, can now do just about anything it wants with its signal. It no longer has regional commitments.
It could close down one of its feeds, such as the East region, and opt for only three feeds — Pacific, West plus a Ontario-East merger. If it wanted, it could launch a national feed to compete with TSN.
These changes are the result of the CRTC’s decision to deregulate the cable industry.
As for TSN, a national service, its restrictions also will be lifted. If it wanted, it could increase its regional coverage. The best news for TSN relates to its companion channel TSN2. Licensed initially as a replay service, TSN2 will be allowed to air a much first-run programming as it desires. And you can be sure TSN2 will take advantage of that.
What to expect? It wouldn’t be a surprise if Sportsnet combined the Ontario and East feeds. And Sportsnet, in the future, could challenge TSN for some national properties.
The service in a position to make the biggest gains from deregulation may be TSN2, which launched 18 months ago. With a large increase in first-run content, it will continue to grow quickly. In the December ratings, it ranked second among all the digital channels, behind only National Geographic

This does not mean that regional hockey on Sportsnet will have out of region blackouts lifted, until Sportsnet can negotiate with the NHL to have NATIONAL broadcast rights.

This does mean that Sportscentre on TSN2 can be live instead of delayed 3 hours. It also will mean that TSN2 can air much more original content.

I didn't realize they had limits on how much different programming they could show. This just shows how lame the CRTC ways are. What a joke.

But Sportsnet does not own national cable NHL rights - TSN does. The reason that Sportsnet has blackouts is that they buy regional rights for games for some of the teams. This decision will have nothing to do with that and may lead to more blackouts if they reduce the number of RSN channels from 4 to 3 or 2.

Wayne, I think we are agreeing.
Maybe I have too many double negatives in my post.

Bottom line: No Calgary Flames Hockey on Sportsnet for those in the East (unless you have NHL Centre Ice) until the contracts for Nationally televised games get renegotiated.

What could happen is a bidding war may start for National rights which could knock CBC out of the running for Saturday night games. Since TSN and RSN get subscriber fees, they can easily outbid CBC for the rights. We saw the same scenario in the States with ESPN getting Monday Night Football.

I wonder if this is the true hidden agenda behind the "Save Local TV" campaigns.

When the last national NHL contracts were negotiated there was much speculation that CTV/TSN would bid for the rights currently owned by CBC. That did not happen but could in the future. I believe the NHL currently sells two Canada-wide rights packages - the traditional CBC/HNIC that includes Saturdays and playoffs, and a national cable contract. No matter what happens to the nationally televised contract I don't think you will ever see the bulk of the Calgary Flames' games in the East.

As a side note - if TSN were to buy the entire rights packages and not show many, if any, games on CTV then OTA only customers would get very little hockey - just like they get no CFL games now and just the odd Sunday afternoon NBA game.

Great news, especially for TSN2! Now we actually get a new sports channel... not a timeshifted one. My hope is they bring more ESPN programming on TSN2, even possibly Sportscenter. They can also broadcast more CIS/NCAA football & junior hockey.

One thing I really liked about TSN2 was their time-shifted Raptor game replays. I guess that will likely disappear, which is too bad. Good news overall though.

So does this mean that if Roger's wanted to, they could make Sportsnet Ontario into Sportsnet 2 and make it a national feed and then still have 3 regional feeds? That would be pretty interesting. Or that TSN can create regional feeds if they wanted to? Will this affect RDS? And what about CBC's SportsPlus service that is yet to come on air?

"These changes are the result of the CRTC’s decision to deregulate the cable industry."

Does anybody know anything more about this decision? Although I read here quite often, this is the first time I hear that CRTC had such intentions. Is it possible that the next deregulation might be to finally kill the rules that allow the travesty called Movie Central to exist?
