Does it really matter who sold the most or why? Just enjoy your machine and the games that go with it. I've never understood why so many people feel the need to explain why THEY THINK one machine is better than the other and then fight back and forth as to why they are right and everyone else is wrong. Does the fact that one machine sold more than another over a given time period some how diminish the value of one machine? Does one system having a higher attach rate somehow make games on the other system worse? Everyone has their own opinion as to which platform they prefer, and no one opinion is more valid than another. Its a preference thing. Relax and enjoy what you have...you'll live longer.

It matters because of title exclusivity (or the lack thereof).

Not everyone can afford both machines. So in that case having a machine with more titles (that you want to play) is a big factor. The independant studios will deliver more games for the the platform that makes them the most money and Microsoft and Sony will negotiate exclusive titles based on their ability to promise more sales.

I agree, that make sense. What I was trying to get at is, everytime one of these threads is opened, it starts out as a legitimate conversation and then ends up devolving into a school yard argument. "Mine is better, no mine is, no mine is, you're stupid, no you're stupid." It gets old REALLY fast.

It was always been that way with consoles, from the birth of the industry. I remember arguing with friends about why my Atari 2600 was better than their Intellivision (it totally was!) and that was more than 30 years ago.

No disagreement on the fanboy arguements although the discussions here have generally been a lot more civil than most places.

From a technology and business point of view the Xbox360 vs PS3 is a compelling story though especially given the part that the PS3 and Sony played in the HD-DVD vs BluRay battle.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the successor to the 360. I don't expect it to be launched in 2010 but I wouldn't be surprised if it launches in 2011 since the 360 will be 6 years old by then.

No doubt MS will be the 1st to release the "next gen" system for various reasons.

1: The 360 is a year older than the PS3
2: It doesn't have the legs of the PS3
3: MS probably want to erase RROD from the collective conciousness of the world
4: Sony spent gross amounts of money developing the PS3. They can't afford to release the PS4 anytime soon.

Still though, you won't see the next Xbox until 2012/2013.

What about the losses from repairing/replacing broken consoles? Sure they might make a profit/console sold, but overall its gotta be pretty tight.

I will venture to guess that Nintendo will be the first out with a new machine. No way will we see the Wii being Nintendo's main home system for the next two years, especially with the large push of HD TV's in the home. Even Nintendo execs. are finally stating that HD is important.

+1, and thank-you all for a compelling discussion!

I think MS will bank on Project Natal to essentially reinvent the Xbox experience and divert attention away from its limitations. This would give them a chance to do an even better job of what Nintendo was trying to do and cash in on the masses that were drawn to the Wii.

I think Sony will focus on media centre capabilities and recovering its shortcomings in game development. If they don't help developers get past the steep learning curve for using the Cell to its potential, the investment in hardware will be a complete waste.

Neither Sony or MS can justify a next-gen to their shareowners at this point.

It is followed by the PlayStation 2 with 20.4 percent of usage time and the Nintendo Wii with 19 percent. Surprisingly, the PlayStation 3 didn't make the list top-three list.

I've said it before more real gamers play 360, way more wiis in the world then 360 but 360 has more logged time. ps3 didn't even make it,
WOW!!! You do realize there is land beyond the USA borders right? I think Asia and Europe (where the PS3 outsells the 360) might have something to say about your real gamers comment. You really do suck up any propaganda that shines the 360 in the purist light. The world picture is more important.

It appears to be that way.
MS confirmed the other day at CES 2010 that the Natal add-on for Xbox will be available for Christmas season 2010.

There was talk earlier in 2009 about a wand controller coming out for PS3 for use with the PS Eye but I haven't heard anything about that for a while.

It's due this Spring which means probably Fall/Winter. Personally I can't wait for it. Got my PS3 Eye ready to go. Their E3 presentation left me wanting more.

no because the people logging serious time playing a system are the real gamers,
not saying PS3 doesn't have real gamers but its pretty safe to say for PS3 with similar sales numbers to not even make the top for logged time playing means that a lot of people are watching Blu-rays and not gaming with their PS3,

Wii sell almost double the amount of systems and doesn't get as much play time as 360,

1 big assumsion is that xbox 360 users only play fps I got 31 games for 360 in my collection currently and my only shooters are Halo 3 and CoD 4-6
for PS3 I only have CoD 5 and 6 as well as UFC,

I\m not saying there aren't real gamers on PS3 I'm saying there are more on 360 and I think these numbers prove this

Again Steve, these are only US numbers. I'm sure if you look at Asia and Europes user percentage it would be much MUCH different. US Hardcore gamers choice is the 360 which does not reflect the world of gaming. Please accept this fact and move on.

This is a useless post, but I have 2 PS3s (both used regularily) and no xbox 360's lol.

If you're going to look at usage minutes, consider the minutes on the PS3 and Xbox used as a media sharing and multi-media device as they are both marketed as such (more-so the PS3).

To me, what does it matter if the PS3 or Xbox is being used to play a Blu Ray or DVD, or HD DVD for that matter? The PS3 was designed from day one to do exactly that in addition to playing games, and the Xbox added the external drive later on to compete.

These systems are not just game consoles, they are home entertainment units. The fact that the sales of the PS3 are going up is a sign that popularity and usage of the system is increasing, whether it be for Blu-Ray or gaming (or both!) despite the dropping prices of standalone Blu-Ray players. I see it as impressive, as I personally didn't expect PS3 sales to increase as standalone Blu-Ray player prices dropped so significantly.

I firmly believe that although Blu-Ray is becoming more popular, it will only become truly mainstream when HDTV itself becomes truly mainstream.

I say way to go PS3, keep it up!
