Default UPS/surge protectors

I'm thinking of buying a couple of surge protectors or UPS' even though I'm not sure if I really believe in them. I would only be interested in what would be considered a good buy. Cheaper is better for this purchase.

Does anyone have suggestions on where I would find the best deals? online or local (Edmonton).

the APC's at the Source online seem to be cheaper than Costco online, but do not seem to be discounted at all.

If you're not in a hurry, you simply need to watch for the various sales - BB, Source, FS, Dell, etc. It's quite common to be able to buy a UPS for roughly half price. Many of these places will also send you an e-mail if the price on an item falls to your range.

The digital deals forum here also typically shows one if it comes up for a good sale.

The APC ES 650 at The Source is actually a pretty good deal. The other stores want more money for this unit which is "right sized" for a typical desktop PC and monitor. I've had a similar unit (older but same model and ratings) for several years and haven't had any issues with it. I've seen it on sale cheaper at FS but not recently since they raised their prices significantly since then.

Dell is in the middle of their "deal days" and sometimes the hernia-inducing APC UPS goes on sale with free shipping.

It's the shipping cost that will kill you because of the weight of the unit.

I've bought 4 or 5 refurbs from upsforless.com and not had a single problem. If you are toronto based you can pick up in markham instead of paying for shipping as well.

How about Whole Home Surge Protection ? One poster in a surge protector thread mentioned these can be bought for as little as $50 at home improvement stores (Loews)

so far the best I can find is $165 Eaton Cutler-Hammer at Home Depot.

Whole-house protectors are a good first line of defence. They work well to protect things like your fridge, furnace or garage door opener. However you should still have additional, separate surge protection on sensitive electronics like computers, tv's, etc.

You'll also have to factor in the cost of an electrician because the device installs at the service panel. I'm personally not particularly confident poking around in there!
