Well TSN - HD (or should I say not-HD) has done it again....

Firstly, the time changed at the last minute. Luckily my DVR picked up the time change.

Secondly, they are showing a windowboxed (non-HD) image on Rogers 278. Luckily again, I was up and set the DVR to also record TSN-SD, since that image is usually clearer than a massively stretched upconverted signal on an HD channel.

This makes the decision to "not subscribe" to the Rogers $10 package even easier...

It is possible that the "blame" could rest outside TSN, but I doubt it.

Only the US and Canadian races were produced in HD by HDNET (and picked up by TSNHD). TSN erroneously indicated in one of their listings that all Champ Car races would be in HD, thus the consion.

TSNHD right now is worth it only if you are an NFL fan. For me at least it's worth $.50 a week to get -
NFL Countdown
NFL Primetime
NFL Monday Night Countdown
Sunday Night NFL Game

So I'll continue to subscribe for the next 2 months, after that there will probably be nothing worthwhile until next September.

Ahh, makes sense - they had it listed as HD on their HD listings, but there's no HD beside the regular listings.

However, the programme is obviously 16:9, so I'm somewhat confused. If they've got an incoming 16:9 image, why not show it "properly" instead of window-boxed. Don't bother answering, I already have guessed the answer.

Didn't realize it was 16:9 on Rogers. Strange because it was 4:3 on BEV.

Yeah, it was 16:9 on Rogers TSN - HD and SD. There was a short time when it was 4:3, right near the start of the race, but it was 16:9 for the rest of the 2 hours on both channels.

When it was 4:3, the regular (US) announcers were also not on, so there must have been some feed mixup. They said the video feed was coming from "Australia 10" or something like that.

That was Jeremy Shaw and his sidekick. They do the international versions of Champ Car races. We often get them for the far-flung races such as Australia (and Germany and England a few years ago). They are quite good actually but no pit reports and the car audio is usually buried pretty far down. I was actually a bit surprised when it changed over to the regular guys a minute or so in.

BTW, there were no pit reports for the regular broadcast either. In fact, I'm not really convinced the announcing crew even went to this race. There were no 'stand-ups' of them at the beginning like they usually have. For the F1 races on Speed Channel, they just sit in a studio in North Carolina like you would with a couple of friends and comment on what they see on tv.

Your right!!!!! They were not even @ the race. Cutting costs I guess. Next year however the rumours are that at least 7 races will be on CBS in HD and all the races on HD Net, so maybe we will see more HD races next year!?!?

Well, given this recent announcement by CART, I wouldn't hold my breath:

Quote:
INDIANAPOLIS (January 21, 2005) – The Champ Car World Series will turn to one of the most experienced sports production companies in all of North America to produce the broadcasts of the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford in 2005, naming Molson Sports & Entertainment Inc. to produce the television package for the 2005 Champ Car World Series season.
Molson hasn't exactly been at the forefront of porting their productions of hockey and other sports to HD.
