I know this is off topic but I think it is worth adding. Mods: please remove if you disagree.
What you are seeing is one of the biggest limitations of the HD realm; content. Just because a channel is provided in 'HD' doesn't meant the content on that 'HD' channel is actually HD. We have to watch our local news on CTV Calgary 'HD' in 'SD' as the local facilities are not yet set up for HD. Commercials and other programming are in HD but not the live news broadcasts or the content included in them. They only recently added some blue 'filler' graphics to both sides of the 4:3 signal so one can assume there is some HD equipment being added, although it seems to be happening at a snail's pace. Think about old tv shows. There never was anything recorded in HD because there simply wasn't any HD equipment being used as it didn't exist yet. So, plenty of content (eg: re-runs) that may get shown on current 'HD' channels will be SD and very noticeably 'different' from what you would expect to see on an HD channel. |

FAQ on the topic: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=76068 What's on in HD.
As mentioned above, not everything on an HD channel was produced in HD.

After a few months of relatively trouble-free operation, the failures have started up again. Had three failed recordings, one of which was a one-shot (as opposed to series) recording, which has never happened before.
Weirder yet, while watching (and deleting) saved programs yesterday, the capacity dropped to "0% full", which was wrong no matter what kind of new math you use. No problems watching other recorded programs, but the 0% worries me... especially as it remained after an off-on cycle (not a full reboot). Do I think anything can be done about this? No, but I feel the need to point out the problems are still there. |

Same thing here. I had a recording error last week on L&O SVU. Luckily I was home and noticed the record light was not on so I could correct it. I had one other one a couple weeks ago, but prior to that it had been pretty much trouble free (other than sound drops) for a couple months.

All morning my box is rebooting over and over again? I have no changes made to anything to do with it. Any ideas.

Have you tried it without the external hard drive connected?

Just sent my Pace box back to Shaw. Sound kept cutting out and I got a better deal from SaskTel Max anyhow. So now I have my eSata drive left, and I'm wondering if there's a driver or program out there that will allow me to access the recorded content?

I'm pretty sure you are out of luck on that one but, just in case you do find something that lets you watch it, please let me know as I have a similar situation with an expander I lost contact with last year. Not wanting to 'lose' the recordings, I went and bought a second expander and haven't had any problems with it. It sure would be great to watch the stuff I had saved on the first one but the drive content and the box it was recorded from are 'married' so, like any divorce, there is a lot that gets lost when you separate the two.

I figured out the thing about having to do Power + Settings to reach the Closed Captioning menu.
Here's the problem: Suppose I'm watching a program that's being recorded, and I want to enable/disable CC. To do so, I have to briefly power off the PVR, which interrupts the recording. So is there no way to turn CC on/off without disrupting the recording in progress? |

On a Motorola PVR that is correct.
