Can't get TSN HD on 3100 - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

So I just signed up for Bell Expressvu and found out that I get TSN HD on my HD receiver but cannot get TSN on my second TV with the 3100 receiver.

The Bell guy told me I have to pay an extra $8 a month to get the sports package 1 to get TSN SD. How stupid is that! To down grade you have to pay extra when already paying an extra $7 month for HD receiver and $10 month for HD package.

I heard somewhere that according to CRTC Bell cannot do this. That if you get HD channel, SD channel must also be provided. Is this true? Anyone got info proving this rumor?

Secondly, how do I get around my issue of not having TSN SD without paying extra? Is it possible?

The 3100 is not an HD receiver and will receive no HD channels. In order to receive HD channels, you need a 6131 HD receiver.

Yes, I understand that you need an HD receiver to get HD channels.

What is stupid is that when you have multiple TV's in your house, and you are paying for HD channels, why do have to pay extra for SD channels.

If everything was HD, and all TV's and receivers were HD, then this problem wouldn't exist.

For example, when you get basic channels and have an HD receiver and HD package, you get CTV, Global, CITY, CBC, NBC, etc in HD and SD. Why is this not the same for TSN and Sportsnet, etc?

If you're getting TSNHD without the Sports 1 SD theme, just be thankful that you're getting a freebie by accident, because you shouldn't be getting TSNHD at all.

You pay firstly for the SD version of the channels and then secondly for the HD versions. In order to get a channel that has an SD and HD equivalent you must sub to the SD version to be able to receive the HD version.

With TSNHD the problem here is BTV's system that they use. It has a 2nd tick in their system to enable the HD version aside from the SD version. I know i've had the problem and many others have because its not in the same screen like many of the other SD/HD options. So what likly happened in your case is that somebody ticked off TSNHD even tho you don't sub to the SD version so you're getting it for free untill they catch onto it.

As nice as it would be just to be able to sub to the HD channels, like you said you have a 3100 receiver which can not decode the HD channels so you wouldn't be able to see anything on any of the SD recievers you have. Anywyas, theres lots of threads on those topics.

Check to be sure you don't have the Sports 1 SD theme; since you have the HD version.

spun14 that doesn't sound right, or at least not how it works for me. Yes you need Sports 1 to get TSN HD, but I didn't think this held true for other channels. For example I do not sub to News and Learning 2 (which contains National Geo SD) but I DO subscribe to More HD Variety and get the HD version of National Geo. Bell's official channel guide on their website supports this also, as there is only a note for the HD Sports package specifying you need the SD equivalent.

I believe it depends on the licencing of each channel. But for the most part you require the SD equiv to get the HD version. As you've stated there are a few which don't seem to require it. Most of bell's programming doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense especially when it comes to SD and HD.

To be honest most of the HD programming packages look like they've just been thrown together untill they come up with a better plan.

When you subscribe to the standard version of many channels, you will get the HD version for free.
The exceptions are:
HD Sports, for which you have to get the SD Sports 1 theme - lots of other channels there besides TSN.
Raptors HD - although I'm a little fuzzy on how you get the HD - you may have to subscribe to More HD Sports.
All of the other channels in the HD theme packs - you DON'T have to subscribe to the SD version of National Geographic or Discovery to get them in the HD themes.

I'm new to this forum and I searched everywhere but couldn't find the answer so sorry if my questions is a repeat.

I tried to order TSN HD yesterday and the Bell CSA told me that I had to order Sports Theme 1 in SD. Why? It seems like a total scam to me. If I have the HD channel why would I need the SD version. No other HD channels seem to be like this. I have Discovery HD with out the SD version. TLC, SportsNet, the Golf Channel, etc are similar. Why is TSN different?

The broadcast deal that TSN has with the cable and satellite companies requires it.

This has been discussed ad nauseum in other threads. That's just the way Bell structures their programming. Costs (TSN is expensive compared to other specialty channels) and or contractual agreements determine how TSN is packaged. As a standalone channel, TSN HD would probably cost $5+ so count your blessings that it is bundled with other channels at regular package prices.
