This might be something that would get me to switch my phone from Bell to Rogers but my only fear is that it is free now but will Rogers change this later on and add a fee?
Actually it is already an extra fee. You have to pay extra for Call Display on Rogers Home Phone.

When I was with Bell a few years back this was available with their satellite receivers and had been for years, you just had to be connected to a phone line and enable it yourself in the menu. I could be wrong about this but I believe that your home phone provider didn't even have to be Bell, just any provider that used the phone lines (so not Rogers), and obviously you had to subscribe to caller ID.

It was always free with Bell too, I can't see Rogers charging for it, they'd pretty much be gift-wrapping ammo for Bell's next big BellTV push. If anyone watches US channels you may have noticed Time Warner ads ripping the lack of this functionality in FiOS. On top of that charging for it would be a straight up cash grab, once the firmware update is in place there is no on-going work for Rogers, it would be like charging you monthly to have the HDMI port enabled.

This thread is about Rogers. The Bell system worked because the STB was connected to a phone line (which most people used). This (Rogers TV Call Display) is different because here both the STB and your home phone need to be connected to Rogers Cable.

As mentioned several times in this thread, it's not really "free" since you need to subscribe to Rogers Home Phone call display in the first place. The aspect of having it appear on the TV is a "bonus". This will only work with Rogers Home Phone when combined with Rogers Digital STBs

From the press release

Quote:
The service will be available at no extra charge to Rogers Home Phone customers who subscribe to Rogers Call Display and subscribe to Rogers digital cable.
So, if you already have call display & digital cable, there's no extra charge. If you don't have both those services, it's not available at any price.

Sorry, I missed the bit about having to subscribe to call display. Funny, I'm so used to call display that I forgot I actually am paying for it! I'm also so used to Rogers giving you something for "free" but then later either dropping it (Usenet, Website, Flickr, etc ...) or getting you to pay for it elsewhere that I'm a bit jaded. Going off topic though.

Cheers,

jayson

I actually like the ideal of TV Call Display. I would suspect, too, that, if one doesn't have a call display phone, the customer could still order Call Display and the television would be the CD screen. Even with Rogers Classic Value Plan $24.95 choice of two calling features, the CW information would also come across the television screen, I would suspect. Looking forward to it's launch.

Sure, the CD info would be on the screen, if you subscribe to CD, have RHP and a STB, even if you don't have a CD phone. In the same way that we've got several different phones at home, each handling CD a bit differently and some without CD at all.

This is indeed great news. Had this service with Bell before I switched to Rogers just over two years ago and missed having it.

While I'm happy its arriving, I'm also wondering why it took so long. Maybe because it will benefit only those customers that subscribe to both services - Digital Cable and RHP with Caller Display - it wasn't worthwhile. But its an extra selling feature to entice customers to subscribe to these services - while also getting the bundle discount.

I guess the App is built into the firmware of the STB and it just grabs the info off of the cable line when a call comes thru. Definitely this will be a big convenience for me since I find it a pain to look at the Call Display on the phone when I'm watching tv.

Wish Rogers would spend their time and money to upgrade the IPG rather than this feature - seems useless to me.

It's not useless. It'll let you know who you're ignoring, when you're watching TV. ;-)

I'm sure many members would prefer to see upgrades to the guide and other features than this but that is NOT the point of this thread so lets please stick to the topic at hand or you could find your post deleted.

It doesn't grab the caller ID info from the cable line - that info is not on the cable line in a format the set-top box can recognize. There is likely a server in the Rogers headend that processes the information and passes it to the set-top box.

Is this going to be available in Rogers NB? Or is this yet again something for the land of Rogers? This would be a great feature to have.

Do they have Rogers Home Phone via cable in NB? If not, then no. Not sure if this feature is specific to SA equipment at this time.
