Default Bell vs. Rogers Internet Service

I'm currently with Bell - supposed to be 6 Mbps - but at best I get about 2.8. I guess I'm a ways from the central office.

My cost including modem rental is $51.90 before taxes.

Rogers is offering me Express - 10 Mbps for $44.99 intro and more after 6 months.

I presume I wouldn't get 10 Mbps - but would I get more than 2.8?

Is one more reliable than the other?

I can say a lot of negative things about Rogers BUT I will give them credit, their internet speeds for home service are close to what they advertise.

Don't forget that price goes up $10 to $15 a month after six so you may want to look at the next level down for Rogers.

Finally, have you contacted Bell? Sometimes they can adjust nodes to improve your speeds.

I tried contacting Bell and they were more than useless.

They couldn't even get my account number right. They claim I have 2 accounts and I needed that straightened up before they could do anything.

I've only ever had one account and have no idea what they were talking about.

Rogers Internet Express service doesn't go up by $10 or $15 in 6 months.

The full price is $46.99/mth + $3 modem or $4.50 wifi router or purchase the hardware in a Rogers outlet. The pricing is transparently displayed on the Rogers website.

There is a $14.95 activation fee and an installation fee if you require a technician to come to your home to hook it up. Looking for more savings? Ask about purchasing your modem at a Rogers outlet: recently the $99 modem charge was rebated spread over a few months; I don't know what the current deal, if any, is.

If you also have Rogers cable TV, you may wish to ask about ongoing bundle discounts.

Bell may be able to adjust your provisioning speed; but if you are looking for a 10 mbps / 60 GB transfer, you'll find Rogers meets your needs.

What's your bell modem?
I could probably analyze it's results to tell you if it's a 2 minute (+9000 hours on hold) call to fix or if it's indeed distance/line related (not much you can do)

Check this thread for some suggestions if it's the 2wire:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=103714

Personally, I'd rather go with neither :\
But i'm with the lesser of two evils by using Teksavvy via bell. Same (IMO, better) service for cheaper.

That link in post 7 is a very good one. Read that thread if you wish to stay with Bell. And to echo what was said about Rogers, they do provide the speed advertized - also discussed in that link.

Express recently changed from 7 to 10 download, so some previous threads may refer to the 7 number, but all the people who were getting 7 are now getting 10.

Nothing is transparent on the Rogers site when it comes to pricing. I have never seen a price advertised that was the bottom line price. Always * after the price plus SAF fees etc etc.

FWIW, I was thinking Extreme which is $59.99 per month.

Call bell and ask them to ship you a replacement for the speedstream 5200. I did that. They sent me a new one that has wireless & includes wep security. Works nice. They can alos test your'e connectivity to see if they find an issue.

You could get a better deal - $9 off Express for 6 months and $1.5 off the price of a wireless modem = $40.99 for 6 months, then afterwards $46.99 + $4.5 .. Note that this is a 1yr contract.

Try going to 192.168.2.1
Username: admin or bcadmin
Password: admin or bcadmin

(you may need to bypass the router temporarily)

Look under status and statistics for some attenuation and SNR values for upstream and downstream, as well as sync rate (which I'm guessing is 3008 based on your first post)
If that doesn't work, try this utility: http://www.dslreports.com/r0/downloa...treamStats.zip

If you're not interested in whether bell is just screwing you over and are changing anyway, disregard this
