Gord, couldn't you back everything up on an external drive, then put the 250 in the slim, re-format and then pull it off the external? And then take the 120 and put it in the 60 and do the same? Or does the encryption of the drive to the ps3 nullify that.
Sadly I cannot get the info back as in Sony's short sitedness of having to re-format the drive even if I was to try extracting the info. to my computer, would erase everything anyway. I might give the Gilksy method a shot just to get the info. off the 60. Otherwise its 12 games of lost saves. |

Good luck if you give it a go - here are my tips: take your time and bring your laptop next to your work bench so you can pause, rewind etc. the you tube video to make sure you get all the steps. I almost messed up my second time because I was hauling through it and I did not disconnect one of the ribbons and almost pulled too hard (risk of damage is pretty high) thinking it was just sticky. Note that there is not a single step where you need to apply any kind of force to get parts to come apart - so if you are having to force something, it is likely you missed a screw, a ribbon or a power connection - go back and double check.
Be sure to incorporate the flux step the first time...I've been running long hours (my kids have left it on overnight a couple of times) and it's still going strong...since my second fix with the flux. Note - go to the fluxing video just before it's time to apply the heat gun to the chip. Best of luck and keep us posted! Eljaca. |

Did the fix but now it sounds like a 747. It goes from silent to full fan in about 5 minutes. Don't really care though as I only wanted the info off of it so as to put it on the slim. Then its boxed and put away because of the way the fans kick in. I do not want to risk putting a disc in for fear of losing it. Lots of good times with the 60. Farewell my dear friend.

/Salute for our fallen comrade. May he rest in peace.
Too bad the Emotion chip wasn't swappable. |

Did you use the flux or not bother (given your goal of getting the disk out as opposed to long term recovery)? That said, if you are boxing it away, I'd be happy to buy it from you instead to give it a try myself! Send me a PM if you are interested - name your price. Eljaca. |

My 40GB machine always used to be quiet. I would play games, but also stream movies. I recall last year when I was playing GTA4, the fan would kick in at the loudest level after an hour or more, and I just figured it was because GTA4 was so graphics intensive. Made GTA4 seems cooler, actually.
But now the fan kicks in all the time, and after not a very long time. Games, but also streaming and regular DVD playback. I did read somewhere that I should try turning off DVD upscaling, but is that really a solution? And does that have anything to do with streaming movies? It really is too loud when watching movies. So, I'm wondering, should I pop the PS3 open and change the thermal paste. Or is any of this related? I tried running a vacuum along the vents, and raising the height of the PS3 (which sits horizontally) to allow more flow from underneath. And the PS3 is in a pretty open spot, high up off the floor (top of my tv cabinet), and in the same spot it's always been in. To be honest, I feel like things may have changed after a firmware update. Also, I have been reading about people who exchanged their loud PS3's within their warranty period, for refurbs, which were much quieter. Makes me think Sony is taking PS3'a and doing something simple like better thermal paste before returning them. |

I did use the flux and a thin layer of thermal paste just like in the video. Considering the amount of paste I had to get rid of, I don't see how anyone could over-apply compared to Sony.
If this is the reason I may open it up again and re-apply (someday) just so I have a proper working back-up (Sorry Eljaca). It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The most time spent on anything really was the waiting for the board to cool down and getting the compounds and heat gun. It was, of course, the last place I looked that had everything I needed for the reasonable price of $60. Props to Ko-Hen Electronics. Taking it apart and putting it back together was easier than I thought when following Gilksy's video. But MAN do they get dirty inside. The dust was crazy and I vacuumed the vents many times. Hopefully now I religiously back-up the info just in case of another crash. |

This is begining to be a pain...PS3 died again last night. I'm not going to attempt the fix again for another couple of months....we are in the process of moving so it will be in storage
Good news is that my wife wanted to watch a movie tonight so I bought a new 120GB Slim...since we already packed basically everything except the TV, I was able to convince her that a new Slim would be a smart replacement for the upstairs TV eventually....the basement will be a while before it gets finished (new home theatre) so the 60 gb can wait...maybe Gilsky will have perfected the fix (i.e. a fix that lasts) with some new trick by then. I was sure that the flux would do the trick given the likely issue....guess not. See you in the slim thread Eljaca |
