Default Just a stereo guy

Hello All:

what a great forum this is, too easy to spend a lot of time reading...lol

I have a question:

I have a great lcd tv, 42" Bravia, have a Bluray player and Focal Chorus speakers running through a NAD 3155 amp. I want to get a new amp that will let me run a cd and a dvd player, plus take an hdmi feed from the pc. I have looked at the new NAD series 737/747. My situation is that I am not that interested in surround sound and all the NAD and similar A/V receivers seem to be set up for surround, is there any brand out there of the quality of the NAD that will do what I need in stereo?

An AVR with HDMI inputs will very likely have surround sound. If you get a good one, there is absolutely nothing wrong with running it with only 2 channels, or a 2.1 setup, but...

Why does the AVR have to take an HDMI fee? Couldn't you run that to the TV?

Since you have a BD player, don't you want to take advantage of the lossless audio formats via HDMI and listen in surround sound?

Have a look at the following post regarding AVR features:

Then have a look at the following post, useful for those new to the forum - FAQs, Search Tips, Optimization, etc.

with an integrated amp, i suppose your one step (either way) from separates or a reciever (avr).

i assume you would be willing to pay (up to) $ 1,500 ( roughly MSRP for the NAD 747 ). this $$ ceiling may limit your options for separates;generally speaking. ....avr's ? many options at these price ranges.

..a friendly heads up.. i'm sure you enjoy the laid back, easy going sound from your pairing the 3155 & chorus speakers. you may want to keep this musical genre (catagory/type) ** as i assume by "same quality as NAD" (as above) .. you mean (your preferred) musical quality (and build quality too )

.. look at another NAD, .... Marantz, Harmon Kardon offer up similar musical warmth. if you not sure about HK's AVR's .. their 2 channel stereo stuff would give you that "sound" too and cover off your basic requirements - economically (under $ 500).. . no HDMI .. but there's work arounds re: your PC. (cable adapters ..etc)

link to the manufacturer's manual .. if anything, it's a quick informative read.

3390 (2x80W)
3490 (2x120W)

a Marantz SR5003 (manufacturer's link) may be a great value for you too.gives you current audio/video technology .. with futureproofing.

and ..keep it dialed in to DH.. .. your in the right place.

Another option would be to get a "pretty good" AVR with pre-outs and pair it with a good 2 or 5 channel amp, using the AVR as a Pre-Pro.

Since you are familiar with NAD stereo SQ, I would suggest you stick with NAD AVR. You may be able to find a T965 at a good price at another NAD dealer as they have been on clearout to make way for the T965HD

Thanks all, I am still not convinced I will ever use surround sound, but it may be worth being prepared in case I do...
