Default Toshiba 40RV525R digital audio out question

it seems like the optical output on my tv is in 5.1 but the subwoofer only picks up the front left and right speakers, is anyone else experiencing this with their Toshiba 40RV525R? is there something i'm missing either on my tv or my amp? My set up is currently xbox 360 to Tv via HDMI, TV to amp via optical. I set the audio to digital on the TV and turned off all the aditional audio effects. I'm using a crappy sony amplifier with one optic input, but it works very well when I plug my 360 directly into the amp using digital optical. The reason i want to do this is because i may be getting a PS3 soon and I don't want to have to switch the optical cord between systems all the time. Also, I'm using speaker wire to connect my subwoofer to my amp, the subwoofer has left/right input and output, right now I have the speaker wire connected to the left input, but i doubt this has anything to do with it because again it works fine when i plug my 360 directly into the amp

You cannot typically go "through" an HDTV and maintain a DD5.1 signal. See the following post on that topic:

You can consider getting an external switch for your various components once you get more than one, so that you can connect the devices to it and then have one digital connection to the AVR. If you want to hear HD audio from the PS3, you will need to consider a new AVR with HDMI audio capability. See the following post on AVR features:

Please do not cross-post, your other post was removed. You may wish to also have a read of some of the subwoofer threads since you don't seem to be connecting your subwoofer properly - perhaps due to the limited connectivity of the AVR or the sub.
