Hi,
We just received a 530 from Star Choice. We currently have two lines connected to two 505s, but to permanently place our 530 in its position, we need a third line, which is getting installed on Friday at the soonest and maybe not even then. But we're so curious to check out the 530! So we were thinking of connecting the two lines we have to the 530 to activate it, then check it out, then just turn it off and detatch the two lines (put them back on the 505s). We would then already have it activated when the third line is installed maybe on Friday. Would this be harmful to the 530 in any way? I mean to hook it up, then unhook it. I know it can be picky. We actually could leave *one* of the lines plugged in, which we'd do in Tuner 1, not on the PVR on Tuner 2. I'm under the impression one can utilize Tuner 1 without having to use Tuner 2 for the PVR feed. We can't leave the two lines plugged into the 530 right now because we watch more than one TV at the same time. That's why we need the third line. Does anyone know if it would be OK to do what I'm suggesting above? The Hans |

Oh well, it's pointless anyway. Just discovered that because we have that work order in for installation, no changes can be made on our account. So we can't activate the 530 anyway until the installation's done. Too bad we only have one guy in our area that just show's up if and when he feels like it...well, it's not quite that bad, but he's pretty ornery...

FWIW, if it was activated, you would have no problem doing what you suggested.

If you call (again) and really press for it, they'll probably activate it.
Once a receiver is out of the data stream for several days, it does need a refresh though (which can be done online). |

I have two activated receivers that sat in the closet out of the stream for over two months. The other day I hooked them up, gave them a "hit" from the *C web site, and they worked instantly.

a new receiver is usually busy downloading guide info for a while when it's first activated and then updating software/firmware overnight when it's shut off, so you would want to leave it hooked up for at least a day before unplugging it.

Thanks for the replies. The ornery guy did show up an hour or so ago and did the installation. When the 530 was being activated, he was flipping around all over and initially all the bars didn't light up on the front and it wouldn't seem to bring up that Channel 299, plus National Geographic HD showed up on 300. So he did one of those resets on the front and they started from scratch (he and the person on the phone from Star Choice -- I mean Shaw Direct). Now (theoretically) everything's fine as the guide's loading. I know those 530s are pretty picky, so I was nervous that he *already* had to do a reset. But we'll cross our fingers. :-)
