if i have windows xp and purchase a mce remote with the ir blaster etc... Do i need any software to use the remote solely for windows media player or does it only work with the windows media center program.

You should look into Eventghost. I configured Eventghost for a friend to use with XBMC and it is very flexible and free. While you're at it, you should look into XBMC. Windows Media Player is very basic.

The controls for Play, Stop, Fast forward, etc will work with Media Player as well. Clicking on the Green Button or My Music will bring up the Media Center interface.
