Yes, you are correct. There is a green screen behind them (the anchors). It looks so fake and there seems to be no movement behind in the newsroom! LOL! The exciting news is that you don't have to wait long for the new HD studio. They will be unveiling the new studio on Monday, November 16, 2009!

Yeah, I had a talk with Renu Bakshi.. she said they delayed it. No idea why but it is confirmed that they're launching the HD set sometime this week. I wonder when!!

I'll post an update as soon as I know when!

They are going full 16:9 HD Monday November 23. They were planning to go a week earlier but they are upgrading their set and there was a delay with some of the set pieces. They technically have been in HD for weeks but are "artificially" adding the black pillars until the actual launch. All of their field cameras and editing are also HD, but their microwave trucks and helicopter won't be upgraded until next year.

Think there'll be an on-air mention of the fact they're now broadcasting the news from Vancouver in HD?

Kudos to be had if they mention that they're available OTA in HD as well.

As with all other CTV programming, CTV broadcast has been HD for at least one year now, both OTA and cable of course. But only until recently (September 09) that Vancouver newsroom coverage and some local news coverage became HD all the way from camera to broadcast (although still 4:3). Like somebody said earlier, the black side-bars are added back in in purpose before the final glitches to be ironed out. I've seen this practice on some other US TV stations a few years ago before they went for all HD source news. They added black side-bars so bad that they couldn't cover up the top most few lines and you could see picture extended beyond 4:3 boundaries all the way to 16:9 boundaries.

Looking forward to the day they remove the side bars.

I was listening to Bill Good on CKNW this morning and he said that he has done camera tests for lighting the new set. He also mentioned that they would be flicking the switch on Monday. Excited to see how CTV News looks in widescreen
