I know the 500gb gives you the proper 55hrs of HD like the 9242's should have had but anything larger and I doubt it will make a difference

The 9242 is difficult to upgrade. Drive choice is very limited and the drives are difficult to find. It also invalidates the warranty and may make the unit ineligible for out of warranty replacement. The best bet is to add an external drive for archiving programs. That can be up to 2TB and drive choices include most 7200RPM drives. An external drive also retains programs in the event the 9242 needs replacing.

But if the internal HDD fails you're still out of luck as it can only archive to the external drive, not record directly to it - is that right???

Correct. If the internal drive fails, recording is not possible, not even to an external drive.

Too bad. But I guess that's why I have a spare Maxtor drive for it (that I confirmed does work in it - is exactly the right model) which I've been using in my computer for the last 4 years and a 9200 cold standby!

Default Found internal HD for 9242

NOTE THAT I HAVEN'T CONFIRM THAT THIS DRIVE IS COMPATIBLE, I'M HOPING THAT FALCON's LIST IS ACCURATE. If anyone does try it before I get back, please post your results for the rest of us. I will post my results in 2 weeks.

Just want to return the favour. I've found a source for the Samsung-hd105si which is listed by Falcon as compatible internal HD for the 9242. There are at least two vendors who sell this unit ( google search or PM me). Note that this is a 1TB drive and the max size that the 9242 will recognize is apparently 500GB. What a waste.

The unit I ordered is $62 plus $34 shipping USD to Canada (doesn't include duties, not sure if there are any). Unfortunately I won't be able to test the new drive until I get back from vacation. For those who want to take a risk, check on the typical mega electronic store have a WD3200AAJS listed on their web site (only available online). I tried to find out if it was the infamous -57 but they couldn't confirm. It sells for $46 CDN . Odds are that it is not the correct version but they do have a liberal return policy.

If you PM me, please be patient , I'm on vacation and won't be checking the site too often.

Good luck

Unfortunately, there is no joy in Mudville tonight. Although the drive model is the Samsung-hd105si which matches the one in Falcon's list of compatible drives for the 9242 I am still stuck on the flashing red lights. I can hear the drive spinning but it simply won't get past the blinking red lights. I do not get anything to display on the TV regardless which button I press. I have done the reboot and cold boot procedure.

At this point even been able to watch the TV without the PVR function would be nice. I tried leaving the flashing red run over 24 h but there is no result.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Plug a USB thumb drive in the 9242. It may pop up a notice and from there you can clear NVRAM. There are lots of 500gb drives on ebay that will work in the 9242 btw.

Thanks Peano for replying.

As I mentioned before the Samsung HD105SI IS listed as compatible with the 9242 according to Falcon's list.

As for eBay, what model have you found? I will only buy a "New" drive.

I had already tried the USB trick but it did not work for me.

Thumbs down

Update.

After disconnecting the unit for 15 minutes, rebooting with no drives attached and let it flash red for several hours and repeating several times, I was finally able to take control of the unit (ie watch TV).

I tried one more time to test the Samsung drive but no go. It simply flashes red. I left it going for 1 hour just in case it was really slow at formatting the drive but no dice.

In my case the Samsung HD105SI is NOT compatible with the 9242.

I will put back the old hd and get the unit replaced under dish care. I'll use the Samsung as an external drive once it's operational.

Default 9242

What I ment to say was Can anyone tell me off a Hard Drive that I can still find. The ones on the list, I cant seem to find any of them.

Hard drives get updated so often they must be adding hd to the list.

I do not believe the list increases very much if at all, it seems very static to me.

You do know that Bell will provide a Refurb for around $150 in exchange for your dead box.

New drives on ebay are around $115. Search for 9242.

Hey peano, thanks for the heads-up.
Guy in Iowa selling 8 drives new @ 500GB. I just bought 2 of them...one for each of my 9242's.
Nothing wrong with my factory HDDs, but they're several years old now. This is for 'insurance'.
I will test each drive when I receive them sometime next week and I'll report back here.
