Default Video up-conversion

What does it mean?

I'm considering Onkyo TX-SR606. Most of the reviews indicate that the upconvert analog sources to 1080i is not good enough. Is this referring to analog devices that doesn't have HDMI connectivity that it is not converting it good enough to 1080i?

Am I reading it correctly, that if I'm only connecting a blu ray player and Bell TV HD receiver using HDMI cables, then the receiver's output to Samsung LN46A650 using HDMI cable too, I shouldn't be worried about this functionality that Onkyo 606 is not good at?

Thanks in advance.

If the source video is 480i (for example), video up conversion refers to the transformation to a format such as 720p or 1080i/p. Most TVs do a fine job themselves. Some A/V receivers (and some DVD players) have more advanced chips which analyze the encoding and make some improvements knowing the display device has higher resolution (like taking pixels which appear as a staircase and making it a straight line).

Since you are feeding your TV only HD sources, the capability of the A/V receiver is pretty much irrelevant. Even if you were sending some lower resolution video, you would still be fine.

Hi

Not sure if you already bought the AVR. Comparitively Onkyo 805 series uses Burr Brown DACs (used in some high end AVRS costing thousands of $) vs. the 6xx 7xx series that use Cirrus DACs which are OK.

Also Onkyo prices tend to drop rather quickly after a few months. So you may end up getting a good bargain. Even better if you travel to the US even considering the excahnge rate.
