Default Connecting a SA 3250HD to a LCD monitor (with VGA Input only)

Forgive me if this has been asked before....

I'm trying to Hook up my 3250 HD to an old computer monitor
(Accer LCD 22" wide screen with VGA input only)

I tried a VGA to component (Y-sync) in to SA box ...that didn't work.
Should I try a DVI/VGA cable?

Like so...

DVI (D) from a STB and VGA are different signals, so you may not be able to connect without a transcoder. Some (rare) TVs have built in transcoders for certain signals (for example component video to RGB), but most do not. What is the exact model number of the monitor?

This is a computer monitor. It's not an HDTV and it therefore will likely not work with the SA3250HD. You could try component video cables connected to the RGB ports (if it has them - specs were difficult to interpret) - if the monitor has a transcoder, it may work, but since the resolution of the monitor is 1440 x 900 who knows what image you'll get, if any.

If it only has VGA, you're likely out of luck and a transcoder would probably cost more than a proper monitor with the proper inputs.

I should really know the answer to this....

Component video is not the same signal as RGB. I think you're out of luck.

Also, your connection statements are "backwards" since the signal is going from the STB to the monitor.

My apologies, your correct. I did say that backwards.
I have option of Svideo, Video, RGB, DVI out on the SA 3250 and only VGA in on the monitor.

Looks like the converter/transcoder option is kinda expensive too

No you don't. It's component video, which is not the same as RGB - they are different signals.

Your display needs to have a TV tuner in order to take signals from your STB. You probably want something like this http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/d...=LS22TDNSUV/ZA which will act as an HDTV and a monitor.

You shouldn't need a tuner, as that's what the STB is for. Can't monitors with DVI inputs connect to Rogers HD boxes? His problem is having only VGA on the monitor.

Would this work?

Cables Unlimited 6-Foot HD15 Male to 3 RCA VGA Component Video Cable

You are correct that a tuner is not required. This is obvious to anyone who's connected a STB to a TV by any connection other than RF-coax going to the ANT/Cable input, because the tuner is not involved in any way - the STB is the tuner.

Yes, there are monitors out there that will accept DVI (or component video or HDMI) for HD. These do not have tuners and in many cases may not have speakers either - simply monitors, however, they must have the correct connections (inputs).

scampbell, the cable you mention will not work because a transcoder is required. The signals are different and the monitor cannot "see" component video on its VGA input. The OP stated he tried one in post 1. It's like speaking English to someone who only understands Spanish. Those cables are sold because some devices have the transcoders (some front projectors for example have transcoders) typically for component video to RGB, as mentioned in my previous posts.)
