Default suspended ceiling tile question

I can save a ton of cash by cutting 4x2 tiles into 2x2.
we'd like 2x2 tiles

I've heard that they tend to warp if you do, any truth to this?

We put in a suspended ceiling last year. We used 4x2 panels in a 4x2 grid, but lots had to be cut around the edges and such to 1x2 or 3x1 or whatever. I really can't imagine them warping. If anything, I would think they'd be less likely to sag since you'll have twice as much grid support.

What is the material in them? I installed 4'x2'x0.75" that were made of mineral fiber. They were very strong and rigid and never had a problem with sagging. Even the long strips along the edge. What I liked about them is they were beveled along the edge in a 2x2 frame. You can find them here. They were called Avalon Dimensional.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. My panels have never sagged and are the same strong mineral fiber that you mentioned. What Iwas trying to say that cutting the tiles into smaller panels with more support should be even less likely to warp or sag.

I was not clear either. I meant to address Bent. I think the sag-factor depends on the material. Some I have seen look like painted insulation and are pretty flimsy. The mineral fibers ones (while a PIA and dirty to work with) are solid and retain their shape.

mineral fiber is the type I intend to use. - the flimsu ones aren't suitable.
I was unaware that 2x4 tiles are available that are "disguised" as 2x2 tiles (recessed type).

I agree, the smaller the tiles, the more support and the less chances of sagging. Jake has a good point and the above rule would apply in this case too. A nice solid and dense tile would not tend to sag as much as flimsy tiles.

However, there is a premium for such tiles to be paid.

Keep in mind that panels may have a beveled edge which would not be there if you cut the panel in half. I know the 2x2 panels I put up have that, perhaps the 4x2 panels do not.

One side would have the bevel and the cut side is positioned against the wall.

Right! Keep this in mind if you go along with the saving option (which makes sense) as you would more likely want to choose a model that doesn't have the beveled option (many dont especially commercial which are also usually less expensive).

Cheers!
