300ohms,
Is it worth to browse the fleamarkets to try to find one made in Japan ? Or if this did give me better results, then it is not worth it? Intravino |

Today, I picked up an antique, never been used, clay Scottish pipe for $3. A new pipe in the tobacco store is a minimum of $20, and I needed another anyway, heh. I also got well over $1000 worth of SLR camera lenses, in pristine condition, for my son for $42, heh.

I like fleamarkets too.
I guess now, I will search for the perfect balum. Maybe I try to make one. |

in reference to the japanese baluns a couple of people mentioned, are these discontinued or are the japanese still making them (so presumably in this internet age they could be ordered from japan ?)

Good point, I dont know. A lot of the old Japanese manufacturing stuff is sold off to Taiwan and China and others, and the Japanese smartly move on to newer and more profitable endeavors. I noticed that on their blank optical disk manufacturing. The good TY blank CDs and DVDs are now pretty scarce.

Gah. This whole thing is too addicting. Now I'm thinking of replacing the balun in my antenna, because I think the one I bought at home depot might be hampering my signal. (Phillips outdoor model)

According to the links posted earlier, the Philips balun does not compare well.

Wait a minute, there was another analysis done where the Phillips balun was very close to the CM one. I think the moral may be, it depends on the individual unit. The CM one may have better quality control at the factory.

I bought a Source balun, not sure of the name...but I guess the best bet is the CM.

More than likely, but dont throw the other away. Test and compare it to the CM one.

I'm really lamenting the fact that none of the pre-amps that I can find have 300 ohm inputs. I found the circuit layout for one in a 1977 IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting
(Advanced Antenna Design and an Ultralow-Noise Preamplifier Extend UHF Viewing Area : ieeexplore.ieee.org/iel5/11/4044035/04044041.pdf but you need an IEEE account or access to an institution that has one... Thanks, local college!) But that is beyond my current insanity level here. |

What's the basis for your statement that the balun might be hampering your signal - are you experiencing reception difficulties????cause now you have me doubting... |
