Use splitter instead of running third cable?

Hi,

I have a new elliptical dish with a quad LNB (I think that's what its called?), and I have two lines going into the house from the dish. I have two receivers hooked up, but my brother is going to be living with me for a while (financial problems) and he said if he brings his receiver to my house and run a line from the dish to his, he will still get the programing. (he doesnt want to activate one of my old receivers on my account), but since there's 4 feet of frozen snow and ground - so I was wondering if there is any splitter that I can get that will work... I have a splitter from when radio shack was around it worked with old non elliptical dish back in the day but not the new elliptical and lnb... also should I stop my brother from bringing his receiver... in terms of legality?

Splitter will work (*I think*)if ur brother's reciever has smart card, and subscribed... Dish is just like antenna.

This is what i would do. His old reciever would not work unless it is activated. Just call *C to activate his rec ( Depending on pkg there is a 4.99 fee per month) and just hook it through a splitter. Radio shack will know the right splitter or by from *C. Your Bro's reciever would have to be under your name for him to bring it over. All he has to do is call to transfer it to you and vise versa when he leaves. Good luck.

It will not work. A coax has only one of four sets of transponders at a time.

If two receivers on a split coax ask for channels on a different set of transponders, one will not get the channel it is asking for.
You need to run a coax so that the added receiver gets independant choice of chanels.

classicsat is correct -- splitters will not work. Also, technically he shouldn't be bringing his receiver at all, as that is against the TOS (receiver should only be used at the place listed on the account -- or a Home Away From Home address, but that costs an extra $50 to set up).

@classicsat - you are correct I tried that and if I was on lets say 500 CNN and he tried 555 military... it would not work on the other (when using a spliter). I just bought a 150 ft spool of standard coax, so were gonna run that over the snow until it all melts and if hes still living with me we will bury it.

Does anyone know if the splitter starchoice sells will work? or is that ony for taking 4 from the dish in and 8 out?

As already stated, there is no single cable splitter for Star Choice.

We just took an activated receiver and hooked it up to the second satellite in our Home Away. No extra fee. Since then, we have added 505s from craigslist problem.

The connection to the dish needs to communicate a 14v or 18v signal to select which satellite to receive.
