Rogers used to have a similar issue many years ago. Their most recent firmware doesn't allow for "series" reminders (only single events). Perhaps that's how they got around the issue.
Anything that is setup as a a named based recording on the 630 adjusts automatically between Daylight and Standard time. Manual Timers on any of the 6xx series be they auto-tunes or reminders do not adjust when the time changes. It is inconvenient but you must go into each manual timer as if you are editing them, no changes have to be made you just have to visit them and then use the go back button to go to the next one and repeat. I usually wait for the blue progress/reprogramming bar to appear before going to the next one. If you have back to back auto-tunes make sure you start at the correct end of the sequence of timers depending on whether you are going an hour forward or an hour back. If springing ahead adjust the last one in the sequence. If falling back adjust the first one in the sequence so that you do not create a conflicting auto-tune.
I did a cold re-start; no change. I got a re-hit from Shaw; no change
I gave up and did like I did last time, manually changed all the timers by one hour.
I expected Shaw would have made some magic to fix this by now.
Called Shaw to check if a used 600 was clear to add to my account. It was but after a Factory Reset on hidden menu, Tech said unit was faulty. Nothing can be done. I accept that, too bad I had already bought it. BUT I am curious where the problem is. Option menus show up. All Option menus show up. Unit looks good except red led is always on. Green LED always on as well.Usually you can always get the Shopping Channel and some others. NOT this time. :frown
Can anyone explain how the Shaw refresh signal is delivered to a receiver? One of the Shaw pages explains that the signal is sent from the "satellite" to the receiver. Does this mean that their satellite communicates directly with the receiver? Or does the signal travel from their satellite to my dish to my receiver?
@Tess The "refresh" is an extra chunk of data in the signal that the satellite is broadcasting. Assuming your receiver has a good signal, the dish catches this, the LNB transfers it to the receiver, and then the receiver sees that it's meant for it and reads it.
There's no "one-to-one" communication though, the satellite can't do that, it just broadcasts everything to everywhere at the same time. It's just that a refresh is a "secret message" that is encrypted, and your receiver knows the key to decrypt this message and read it, if you'll allow a bit of oversimplification. The secret message contained in the refresh also usually contains other secret keys that the receiver can use to unlock the channels you're subscribed to, from what I understand, and that's how Shaw Direct controls which receiver can access which channels.
So long as you get the signal light green (same v-code, F2 horizontal channel, temporary setup change on that secret menu), it will receive the activation hits.
LNBFs are pretty dumb, they just pass the signal they receive from the satellite (downconverted frequency wise,to be carried on affordable coax), not decode, interpret, or listen for codes/commands from space. They do receive commands from the receiver as to what signal the LNBF should be sending down. For standard Shaw Direct LNBFs, it is horizontal or vertical (18V or 13V power), and F1/G1 or F2 (no tone, 22Khz tone).
It would appear that I will need to relocate my dish to receive a better signal. This will mean that the dish will be well in excess of 100' from the receiver. If I understand it correctly, RG6 is not the appropriate cable for the distance. Does anyone know which cable suits the need? Is there any additional hardware required or suggested to improve the signal?
A neighbor of mine has a large number of reminders in his DSR600, around 150 of them. Is there a way to delete all of them? Deleting them one at a time is very, very slow.
He has no idea how they got there. I suspect he is doing something in the guide to set them. Every hour a reminder pops up and he has to get ride of the pop up.
To eliminate the cause of the problem: Your friend must delete each reminder from REMINDER - OPTIONS - REMINDER
To eliminate the symptoms, but not the root cause: Turn OFF Notifications
I suspect your friend has used the REMINDERS to change channels for his favorite shows every day and never deleted the reminders as he no longer requires them.
Try changing the channel instead of disconnecting power. I have seen this on occasion but have not found a cause. Maybe there was a momentary signal loss and it got stuck in that state.
As for changing channels instead of unplugging, I don't see how I can do that because when the Lost Satellite Signal message appears on the screen, I can't change channels....
@goalsgo I've had that problem before on my 600 and 605, typically after a big storm or weather event. The 605 has a green light, meaning good signal. I just hit the OK button to clear the message and change the channel and everything works fine.
Thanks to all for suggestions. It appears the issue started happening after we changed to the newer xKU LNB. Certain channels showed a black screen when the channel map would revert back to the original setting even though the status showed full signal strength. Called SD who made the change permanent and we no longer have this issue.
A few days ago, I installed a pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net/) in an effort to off-load the job of ad blocking from my individual devices browsers (via extensions) and replace it with 'one-stop shopping'. As this is an experiment at this point I'm running it on my personal server (under Mint 19) for the time being but if it works well I'll eventually bite the bullet and put it on a dedicated Raspberry Pi.
My question/concern is that a LOT of the traffic I'm seeing in the logs is my DSR600 constantly contacting Google - it does this approximately every 7 seconds! It's also trying to contact svc1.cdn.shawcable.net but that, at least, makes some sense. My PVR630 does not appear to be doing this.
Any ideas? I can't blacklist google without having to deal with angry family members... as much as I'd like to do just that some days!
@CodyG102 - I asked our testing teams about your google pings from the receiver and received the following reply:
On the 6xx, the DSR background pings the CDN to keep the internet connected status up-to-date in the notification bar and menus. If the CDN does not respond to a ping, it falls back to a ping to Google.
Do you know if you'd be blocking the pings to our CDN, causing the receiver to ping Google instead? FYI, the 8XXs were improved to only ping when certain screens are accessed.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
