Ok, this started yesterday. My unit works fine during the day, but when the next day I try to bring it out of the screen saver, it won't let me. I can press any button on the remote and nothing happens. Only thing that fixes it is a hard reboot. Can't even use the lazy man's way to do a warm reboot. Any ideas?

If you can't find another resolution, turn the unit off when you're done so that it doesn't go to screensaver.

Did you try the power button on the front of the unit itself instead of the remote to turn it on? Why use a timer, just turn it off and walk away?
If the unit turns on using the button on the front of the STB itself, perhaps you have an IR interference issue. See the following thread discussing the topic with options to resolve: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=64463

If you can turn the unit off and it works properly, then I'd use that as a workaround. Otherwise if you need to reboot each morning you may need a repair or replacement. I don't recall this issue before on this forum.
Also you may wish to try a wake up timer set for say 6AM?

Ok, so just got back from the long weekend. Made sure to remove on/off timers and power the unit off. Came back today, hit power on the STB, and it worked fine. I'll try again tomorrow with the remote and I'll try with the machine on to see whats going on...

Alright, so another test last night. Had the 8642 running SARA with a timer to shut off at 4am, which is past the 1:10am screensaver mode. This morning, unit is frozen. So changed the timer to turn off the unit at 1am tonight. Curious to see if maybe the timer trying to turn off the unit after the screen saver leads to a bug that causes the entire unit to lock up.

Ok, so used a timer to make sure the unit shut down at midnight. This morning, it powered on fine. SO, I am pretty sure the 8642 has a firmware bug where if you set the off timer for after the screen saver has turned on at 1:10am, the unit will freeze and require a hard reboot.
Hopefully someone is still on SARA and can confirm. Would also be interested to hear if this happens on the new firmware or not.
