Started this thread so that people can report their findings rather than posting in various other threads...for the record, not getting any HD channels at this time myself....
I checked the Shaw Direct web-site also, nothing of note there yet. But I assume like any business bad news or problems are the last they want to add to a web-site.
"Telesat is in control of the satellite and all indications are that it is healthy and can be returned to service," Telesat stated in a press release, classifying the problem as a "technical anomaly."
It gave no estimate about when service would be restored.
Anik F2 is currently pointing away from the Earth; a cause has not yet been released. But the outage is taking place around the same time that a major solar storm hit the planet. A coronal mass ejection struck the poles early in the morning of Oct. 6, causing auroral displays.
"The good news in all of this it's not a lost satellite; (Telesat) tells us they were communicating with it," said Emily Younker, a spokesperson for Anik F2 customer Northwestel, the sole provider for northern Internet and data and the main provider for phone services.
At approximately 06:36 EDT Thursday, October 6, 2011, Anik F2 satellite experienced an attitude control issue and lost earth lock affecting C, Ku and Ka services. The satellite went into safety mode and moved from pointing to the earth to pointing to the sun. At approximately 07:10 EDT, satellite systems engineering established telemetry from the satellite re-establishing a control channel. Initial analysis shows that the satellite is healthy and we believe we will be able to restore all services. We are in the process of recovering earth lock and re-establishing service.
I do not have sources to qoute but this is what I got.
OTTAWA, Oct 6, 2011 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- Today at approximately 06:36 EDT Telesat's Anik F2 satellite experienced a technical anomaly that resulted in loss of satellite services to its customers. Telesat is in control of the satellite and all indications are that it is healthy and can be returned to service. Telesat is now undertaking to return the satellite to normal operations and is working with its customers on Anik F2 to restore traffic in an orderly manner and minimize the impact to their networks. Anik F2 supports a variety of services in Canada and the United States, all of which are affected by the satellite anomaly.
The disaster recovery plan, in the unlikely event that it is required to be implemented, involves physically re-pointing earth stations to the alternative satellite (Anik F3). This activity would take some time to complete.
Update:
UPDATE! The latest update from Telesat as of 1:43 (MDT):
They have full control of the satellite and it is in good health and responding to commands. Work to restore service to customers is underway. Telesat currently estimates that all services will be restored between 20:00 and 22:00 EDT."
Gee, I never thought of checking the Shaw Direct threads.
We (NorthwesTel) had lost phone and/or cell service in 39 communites. Quite a panic around here today.
This issue is also causing the loss of several HD channels on Eastlink's lineup. I called them to report the loss of some channels today, and they mentioned Shaw's satellite issues as the root of the problem.
Shaw installer was by today to add another outlet. He said the majority of his work today was cancelled, especially new installs. He was seriously pissed.
All my F2 HD (and the French SD channels) gone... 9 Signal & 0 ECB/No on F2 (F1 works fine with 90 & 10.2)/. I've set aside the urge to repoint the dish, will wait here for news on what can be done.
I've had a spectrum analyzer on F2 since I heard it was down. No carriers on C or Ku, Vertical or Horizontal. Read somewhere in this thread they had control and would be restoring transponders one by one but so far...nada.
I just got off my contact from Shaw and he told me that the satellite was hit by a solar flare and was knocked out of its orbit. Something to do with a comet that came close to the sun?? Not sure about that but he did say that they are trying to re-align it but they can only communicate with it in intervals. They next interval will be at 19:00 Ontario time. It is a slow process and it will take a few communication intervals before they can get it back to the proper location. They have started to transfer important channels such as the hockey channels to there other satellite that is still functional for the meantime.
"Loading. Please wait a moment..." just appeared on my 630. Is this related to anything?
Also the 'Scheduling' bar keeps appearing too. Perhaps this is the channel re-maps taking place.
