I've been holding off on buying a receiver because I've been waiting for the 2008 models to come out (ie. Yammy 6160/663, Pio 1018, etc) because I wanted something that had the lossless audio decoding. After doing some more reading, since I already have a PS3 and it decodes DTS-MA and TrueHD, do I really need to buy a receiver that decodes the lossless formats? If not, what are some recommendations on what receivers to look at? I would like to have a minimum of 3 HDMI and 2 component inputs. My budget is around $500 or so, but spending less would be nice since I still need to buy some speakers.
The reason for having onboard decoding of the new lossless audio codecs is to "future-proof". Early DVD players had onboard decoding of Dolby Digital, but was eventually dropped. We're already starting to see that with Blu-Ray players (might be only one model right now...can't remember).
So yes, even though your PS3 does the decoding, it might be smart to invest in a receiver that does the decoding, in case you get a new player a few years down the road that doesn't have decoding capabilities.
I don't think you will find an AVR with HDMI audio processing (only passthrough) with a $500 budget.
With the right shopping strategy and/or willingness to purchase online, I bet the Yamaha 6160/663 could be had for close to that price, if not cheaper.
P.S. I highly recommend it...I love mine!
The Yammy 6160/663 is within my budget (give or take a hundred or so), but I was just wondering if I could get away with buying something cheaper from the current lineup (or good discontinued units) that don't do the lossless formats, but may be good in other aspects (ie. more power, better sound, etc).
