Question

I can't comment on CJNT and what City TV(Rogers) ha instore for it, but I canm tell you that CHRO WILL NOT become a City TV station.

Simplely put Bell Media needs it as a CTV2 affilate and besides Ottawa already gets City TV from Toronto anyways.

In other words, they'll be asking for another conventional English language station in Montreal. That'll be a tough sell for the CRTC, and their chances are not improved just because they own CJNT.

Why do they need two (2) originating stations in Ottawa? Couldn't one be a repeater?

True, but they can't put local programming on a repeater (unless it becomes a split feed). The idea is they will need a local presence in Ottawa if they want any hope of getting hockey rights.

Or, they will apply for a change in license conditions that allow for more flexible programming.

Local english Ottawa TV advertisers have 2 choices: CBC and CTV1/2.

Shaw (Global) and Rogers (Citytv/Omni) have an office there, but it's not ideal to advertise a local Ottawa product or company that also airs in Toronto.

I think that Roger's should think about offering a national Omni sub-channel on their O&O CityTV stations.

Examples:

CJNT-DT
62.1 - CityTV (720p)
62.2 - Omni (480p)

This would I think also help them to set-up a local Ottawa station instead of repeaters of CityTV, Omni 1, Omni 2 from Toronto.

Omni can actually then be a full ethnic sub-channel with some local inserts based on the ethnic mix of each market.

Right now, Omni is run as full stations in Toronto with repeaters in Southern Ontario.

So that will have to change. Like I said, the only other option is having games on both CITY and CFMT so you have the option of watching both, but I don't think its likely. Again, that is part of the rational in CJNT being acquired.
I have heard speculation that Rogers’ expansion of the Citytv network across Canada will also allow Sportsnet’s NHL regional games that are currently on the secondary channels (Sportsnet Flames, Canucks, and Oilers) be put on the Citytv stations instead. The ratings on the secondary channels have been lower than expected. In the past, the Flames, Oilers, and Canucks aired games on Citytv.

Those games were few and far between and doing so means they have to preempt the national schedule. When games aired on the local CityTV station it was the result of not having the alternative secondary feed + Sportsnet regional having other programing commitments. That is no longer the case so I don't see it happening. As much as many crave local sports, preempting network shows causes many (normally the wives) to be unhappy.

Looking at that schedule, why not just call it OMNI Montreal and be done with it...

1. CJNT-TV shall devote to the broadcasting of ethnic programs:
a) not less than 50% of the total number of hours broadcast monthly between 6 p.m. and midnight; and
b) not less than 75% of the total number of hours broadcast annually between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Looking at Citytv's current schedule for the next 2 weeks, there are no 10pm show to simsub, so scheduling Murdoch Mysteries monday to friday keep their canadian quota up, also counting the versions of Omni News.

Since the 8pm to 10pm ethnic restriction is annually based and american shows are currently in reruns (or reality shows), it just makes sense to balance everything they can during the summer with ethnic programming, but trying out a movie on saturday 9pm. That way, they may be able to fit another 30-minutes US show in simsub between 8pm and 10pm this fall without exceeding the 75% limit. That's my theory, but there may be other reasons behind it.

Likely just an application away to the CRTC to be able to alter the prime time programming to that of other CITY-TV stations.

That is truly a stupid schedule for CJNT

They can place current US shows at the 6pm-8pm slots, and even at midnight instead of placing double episodes of reruns. And double episodes of those useless Judge court shows.

They could have even left the CW shows that Channel Zero had secured for CJNT and CHCH.

Do we really need 3 episodes of Three and a Half Men per 24hr period?

It does not look like it as the schedule for this past Sunday and for the upcoming Sunday has ethnic programming.
