I've put a 1.5T Seagate 7200.11 disk in a NexStar CX box and hooked it up. Seems to work.
I'd rather have used a WD Green but there seem to be reports of those things confusing the STB with narcolepsy.
Boy is the STB ever slow booting, with or without the new drive. No wonder they aren't normally powered off. A lot slower than my Acer Revo booting Linux (STB for MythTV front end).

You can achieve 3TB of storage max right now. That means you have a 1.5TB drive replacing the stock drive in the unit and an enclosure of equal capacity attached to the unit.

Good idea but I dare not fiddle with the internal drive since the STB is owned by Rogers.

Very good point that I'm trying to ignore.

The PVR is designed for time-shifting, not for archiving. If you want to archive, use an Hauppauge and HTPC.

We're actually time shifting a long time, not archiving. All has been well until Rogers started shutting down analogue. The Hauppauge HD-PVR approach hasn't seemed as attractive so far, but I'm trying it too.
