Regarding the reason for the relatively narrow footprint, I believe it has to do with the xKu band, which is presently only approved for use in Canada. so the beam had to be tailored to cover as much of canada without significant spillover into the US.
makes sense. I'll update once the new channels/ transponders go live. Once that is a go, the next install I have will tell me yay or nay.

UPDATE: I just was told that some transponders are already active on G1. I've got the settings to set my Super Buddy to be able to get a lock so I will try soon!

There will probably some that are extra but Shaw has stated many of the new channels will be included with existing packages. It all hinges on what many means.

By many, I assume that the many missing OTA channels and HD specialty channels normally bundled with the SD versions will be included. I'm also looking for a lot of missing channels that belong to specialty packages, such as TMN, to magically appear. Otherwise, I don't expect to see any freebies from Shaw.

Shaw's not really be in a position to charge extra for the HD version of specialty channels someone already subscribes to in SD when none of their competitors do that. These aren't "freebies" - you're already paying for them. When Cogeco added a whole bunch of new HD channels last year you got the HD versions so long as you subscribed to SD. I really really don't think Shaw Direct will be any different.

Hollywood Suite, the rest of the channels that go with Oasis (e.g. RadX etc) will probably show up shortly after G1 goes live, too. Hollywood Suite will probably cost $6 a month or so. The rest of the sister channels to Oasis will probably be included in the HD Extra pack that includes Discovery World and Oasis. Hopefully they throw in a preview period for all of them.

Just as an FYI, we do have a sticky for discussing programming and pricing.

We also have a G1 channel speculation thread.

This thread is supposed to be about the launch and final positioning. It will be closed once the satellite is in place and fully functional.
