As a recent Optik customer who converted to the Gateway system I can honestly say I am overall happy with the gateway so far. Yes there have been some quirks, and the lack of communications from Shaw on upcoming updates drives me nuts, Telus was no better.

I personally think that the Optik has better HD quality but the Gateway has better color depth, and the Gateway to me reacts quicker for channel changes. The optik system seemed to have delays at odd times.

As for the mobile app, I frequently used the optik iphone app and the android app on my cell phones and absolutely loved having it. Telus has a real app and not just a website using the phones browser, so it worked fairly good. Ideally it would have communicated directly with the PVR, but i suspect it had to go through a Telus server to work. This is a feature that i miss greatly.

Hopefully someone at Shaw is reading these forums and takes note that Telus is still ahead of them (minus the 6 tuner feature of the gateway), and they had better give themselves a kick to get moving here. Bug fixes must be top priority and rapidly released to the users!!

Turns out it will be both a page and an app. This has been in the works for quite a while now so I would expect to see it very soon. I'm not entirely sure of what the hold up has been but I know there is at least one other feature that will be activated at the same time and that one is due in the next release.

Might I suggest we all start asking shaw via their twitter account and put some pressure towards getting this next update done and out to us? I hate having to hassle them, but seriously, they need to get going here. I want a smartphone app on the android just like I had with Telus.

There is no point bothering the CSR's on twitter in this regard..
there is nothing that they can do about it.
Development projects is a totally different department.

You will need to suck it up and wait like the rest of us..

Default When?

Shaw??
When is smartphone programmability coming? To me this should be here by now. At launch it was talked about and aren't we going on 8 months later??

Rogers already has this feature on some of their old boxes. If this feature comes to old Moto boxes before the Gateway system I may just have to switch back.

Telus Optik also has it on both iPhone and Android and it works awesome. IMO, Shaw is severely behind in the home entertainment arena right now and needs to get their rears in gear and stop procrastinating. A company their size should be able to deliver new features quickly, efficiently, and virtually bug free.

If Telus Optik had been able to have more than 3 HD streams at a time, I would flip back to them in a second just because they have a more complete package all around. And to me, it wasn't plagued with problems like the Gateway is.

the only way Optik can ever offer 3HD streams (plus a half decent broadband connection) is if they replace DSL with fibre to the home.... in other words go from "Optik" to "optic". (Just like Bell in the east need to go from "Fibe" to "fiber")

Gotta love marketing. I'm still not sure what "exo" is.

Based on the information in the threads on new Shaw pricing, "exo" is short for exorbitant prices.

I'm starting to wonder when it will be possible to program a recording from my smartphone.

I traded in my PVRs to get the (buggy) Gateway thinking Shaw would actually use its networking capabilities to actually do something with them. After all, their website uses DLNA the whole "future-proof" features to sell the Gateway.

But having been with Shaw a long, long time, I should know better than to expect them to actually innovate. We're probably a year or two away, based on the history of other features offered by competitors.

That, literally, made me LOL.

Shaw's size, and the complexity of their infrastructure, is such that they might be able to do any two, but not all three at the same time.

I assume you mean "more than 3HD streams", as Optik currently offers 3HD + 1 SD feed as their best connection level, available in most major metro areas.

^ Me drooling over this. Here's the official press release. It's actually been released. Now the question is: how long Shaw?

How long indeed. They are playing with it and it would be 're-skinned' for Shaw use but I have no idea of when it might be made available to the public. Could be next week, could be next year.
