After struggling with 3 terrible SMC routers supplied by Shaw I decided to go out and buy a new one today. I was recommended a netgear n600. http://www.netgear.com/home/products.../WNDR3700.aspx
Get it home hook it up..follow the instructions..all the lights come on but I can't connect to the internet. I power cycle it, check the connections..still nothing. There is a connection because I can open the configuation screen for the router but I can't get an IP. I did notice that unlike my SMC's routers it doesn't use the cable connection but connects by a normal ethernet cable. Any suggestions ? Thanks |

Did you unplug the modem for 10 seconds, wait 60 seconds, unplug the router for 19 seconds? Then see if it works. If not, then do a restart on your PC.

To work properly you might need to have Shaw patch your SMC modem/router into bridge mode to work as a modem only.
Shaw sends the firmware patch so you just need to ask for it through chat or by phoning tech support. Your modem would then be connected to Shaw and your Netgear LAN port plugs into one of the LAN ports on the SMC. |

Don't know about the SMC "gateway" but Rogers Cisco version you have to plug your router into port 1 only when in bridge mode.
You can't talk to the gateway directly from the PC probably at 192.168.1.1 ? and set it into bridge mode yourself? (turn off wireless and DHCP when you do so.) |

To do this would require me to log in to the router correct?

Was that 192.168.1.1 a typo? Normal login is 192.168.0.1

The documentation supplied with router says 192.168.1.1 ..I tried .0.1 also and it just goes to the SMC modem. I want to get to the router.

Are you hardwired to the router because sometimes you need to be for access?

Hi puckbag:
To have any chance of helping we would need a little more information. What exactly is your configuration. i.e., incoming cable is connected to what device (modem, router/modem, brand & model) connected by Ethernet cable to what device (router, brand model) connected to what devices (computers, wired/wirelessly, what OS) and from what kind of computer (MacOS/Windows (which version)) are you trying to communicate with the router (which one - SMC or Netgear)? Also, why have you both the Netgear and the SMC in use? Are you trying to do something like How to set a Wireless Router as an Access Point. |
